PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
Purpose:

The purpose of this qualification is to:
  • Develop specialist clinical skills in occupational therapy in the field of hand therapy.
  • Provide South Africa with specialist therapists in the field of hand therapy in order to provide and promote rehabilitation services for people with hand conditions and the continual development of a high level of knowledge and expertise that is comparable with international standards in the field. Therefore Society will gain specialist hand therapists leading to a higher efficacy of remediation and rehabilitation for those whose abilities in productivity, self maintenance and play/leisure are threatened, restricted or lost due to hand conditions to become full and productive members of the community.
  • Produce graduates with comprehensive, in-depth knowledge in hand therapy approaches, investigated new schools of thought and current developments in therapy for hand conditions and transferred knowledge to the clinical practice and real situations together with well developed research skills. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Access to the qualification:

    Applicants should be in possession of the following:
  • A professional degree or equivalent in Occupational Therapy or Physiotherapy.
  • Registration with Health Professions Council of South Africa.
  • Two years of clinical experience, with experience preferably in the field of hand rehabilitation.

    QUALIFICATION RULES 
    A minimum of 256 Credits should be completed for this qualification. 

    EXIT LEVEL OUTCOMES 
    On completion of this qualification, the graduate should be able to:
  • Demonstrate an in-depth knowledge of different assessment and treatment approaches and techniques in the remediation and rehabilitation of hand injuries and conditions.
  • Maintain and expand practical competencies in clinical application of therapy to clients with hand injuries and conditions in acute and post-acute phases in hospital and community settings.
  • Undertake and complete an essay on a relevant topic to obtain well-developed research skills.
  • Show a continued interest in new developments in the specialist field as a life long learner.
  • Communicate in various forms with a wide range of clients, referral sources and co-workers.
  • Identify and use appropriate and therapeutic technology in the assessment and management of rehabilitation services, taking into account cultural and environmental factors in the design and manufacture of hand orthoses, assistive devices and the choice of treatment modalities.
  • Adhere to the professional code of conduct, ethical rules of the Professional Board and use disability, educational and employment legislation to the benefit of people with disabilities.
  • Display effective interaction within a learning or professional group with competent engagement in debate, in a professional manner and context. 

  • ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA 
    Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcomes:

    Assessment criteria are demonstrated fulfilment of the desired outcomes met through successful completion of all components of the qualification and are assessed through a range of methods including tests, assignments and formal examinations, in written and oral form, the research project and in assessed therapeutic sessions.

    Integrated Assessment:

    Integrated assessment is carried out in written examinations, in the research project and in the therapeutic sessions. 

    ARTICULATION OPTIONS 
    On completion of this qualification, the graduate may proceed to a doctoral degree in the same or cognate discipline at this University or other institutions. 

    MODERATION OPTIONS 
    The University policy is that assessment at exit level (including this NQF Level 8 & above qualification) is externally moderated by appropriately qualified members of other universities or equivalent research institutions. Further, the dissertation is assessment internally by an academic member of staff other than the direct supervisor and by an expert external to the University. 

    CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS 
    Internal and external assessors for the qualification will be selected on the basis of their recognised expertise in the modules being offered. The University assumes that, on the basis of its rigorous selection criteria for appointment of academic staff (who also have opportunities for staff development in assessment), staff are competent to assess students on the modules they teach.
