The qualification content is currently being updated for the qualifications with the status “Registered-data under construction” or showing “DETAILS UNDER CONSTRUCTION” to ensure compliance with SAQA’S Policy and Criteria for the registration of qualifications and part-qualifications on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) (As amended, 2022). These qualifications are re-registered until 30 June 2027 and can legitimately be offered by the institutions to which they are registered.

 

In all of the tables in this document, both the pre-2009 NQF Level and the NQF Level is shown. In the text (purpose statements, qualification rules, etc), any references to NQF Levels are to the pre-2009 levels unless specifically stated otherwise.  

PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
Purpose:

The purpose of this qualification is to provide grounding in knowledge of the core sub-fields of Human Movement Science with specific emphasis on the application thereof in the area of Sport Science. This will result in the accompanying competencies and attitudes to practise Sport Science, pursue further intellectual development, and contribute to society. It is envisaged that this qualification will provide South Africa with sufficient numbers of graduate Sport Science professionals with a clear and growing understanding of the science of sport and in order to ensure professional practice in the sport industry. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
Access to the Qualification:

Applicants must be in possession of a matriculation certificate issued by the Matriculation Board.

QUALIFICATION RULES 
A minimum of 376 credits have to be completed for the duration of this qualification, with at least 104 credits completed at the exit level (third year) of the qualification. 

EXIT LEVEL OUTCOMES 
On completion of this qualification, the graduates should be able to:
  • Demonstrate a deep knowledge and application of theoretical concepts in sport science.
  • Demonstrate an ability to apply theoretical principles of problem identification and solving in the field of sport science.
  • Plan and apply basic research in sport science, including gathering, analysing, synthesizing and interpretation of information on sport science issues correctly by utilizing the relevant theoretical research principles and reflect on the research undertaken.
  • Communicate effectively orally and in writing with the different role players in the field of sport science.
  • Effectively and responsibly organize and coordinate resources and opportunities in the field of sport science by applying the basic theoretical aspects and reflect on the application (including entrepreneurship where relevant), as well as accept the responsibility for their own activities in the field of Sport Science.
  • Practice acceptable social sensitivity in the relationship with others and work effectively in a sport science team by implementing the relevant theory and reflect on the implementation thereof. 

  • ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA 
    Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcomes:

    Assessment criteria are demonstrated fulfilment of the desired outcomes (above) met through successful completion of all the components of the qualification and assessed through a range of methods including tests, assignments, seminars and formal examinations, in written and oral form, and practical work.

    Integrated Assessment:

    This criterion is fulfilled through the assessment of practical work and in the written examinations. 

    ARTICULATION OPTIONS 
    On completion of the qualification, articulation is possible with cognate master's degree where the fields of specialisation include; Exercise Science, Biokinetics and Recreation management. Graduates may also proceed to other institutions for postgraduate studies. 

    MODERATION OPTIONS 
    Assessment for all exit level modules, are externally moderated by appropriately qualified members of other universities or equivalent research institutions. 

    CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS 
    Internal and external assessors for the qualification will be selected on the basis of their recognised expertise in the modules being offered. The University assumes that, on the basis of its rigorous selection criteria for appointment of academic staff (who also have opportunities for staff development in assessment), staff are competent to assess students on the modules they teach.
