Registered-data under construction

The qualification content is currently being updated for the qualifications with the status “Registered-data under construction” or showing “DETAILS UNDER CONSTRUCTION” to ensure compliance with SAQA’S Policy and Criteria for the registration of qualifications and part-qualifications on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) (As amended, 2022). These qualifications are re-registered until 30 June 2027 and can legitimately be offered by the institutions to which they are registered.

 

In all of the tables in this document, both the pre-2009 NQF Level and the NQF Level is shown. In the text (purpose statements, qualification rules, etc), any references to NQF Levels are to the pre-2009 levels unless specifically stated otherwise.  

PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
This programme is the continuation of a long and proud tradition of theological education towards a variety of ministries in the widest possible spectrum of churches. The training is done on a thoroughly ecumenical basis and takes place in close co-operation with the relevant interest groups in society. The programme is offered in increasing co-operation with similar training centres in the region.

The purpose of the programme is to prepare students to fulfil positions of leadership in religious and moral communities in civil society. The specific focus of this programme is leadership within the Christian tradition. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
Students in possession of a Matriculation Certificate, an Exemption Certificate of the Joint Matriculation Board or prior learning, approved by the Board of Studies of the Faculty of Arts, will be admitted to the Foundation Year.

Students will develop skills of critical thinking and debate; reading and interpretation (with specific reference to the Bible); writing and rhetoric; the formation of religious identity (with specific reference to Christianity, its history and doctrines); analysis of society; critical moral discourse on decision making, virtues and public morality; management and community leadership. 

ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA 
Integrated assessment

A variety of assessment produces will be used. These can include the following:
  • Assignments
  • Continuous evaluation
  • Contributions to class debates
  • Examinations (formal and informal)
  • MCQ tests
  • Peer assessment
  • Tests 

  • ARTICULATION OPTIONS 
    Students who have completed 480 credit points may continue with a Master of Philosophy or a Master of Theology in Theological Studies or Ethics. 

    MODERATION OPTIONS 
    All forms of assessment are moderated by an external examiner appointed by Senate on recommendation of the Department of Religion and Theology. The moderating body for this qualification is the Council for Higher Education. 

    CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS 
    An assessor will have at least an Honours or Masters degree in the appropriate subject plus a minimum of three to five years' experience in teaching the course. 

    REREGISTRATION HISTORY 
    As per the SAQA Board decision/s at that time, this qualification was Reregistered in 2009; 2012; 2015.
