PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION

1. To educate and train undergraduate dental students to render a comprehensive (preventive, diagnostic and therapeutic) oral health service to the broad community and so to prepare students for a professional career in dentistry.

2. To educate and train undergraduate dental students to such a level of competence that they satisfy the criteria of the Health Professions Council of South Africa for registration as a dentist

3. To engender in students a culture of helpfulness towards their fellow human being

4. To engender in students a desire to maintain and further improve their clinical knowledge and skills after graduation by continuing postgraduate education.

5. To develop and promote the use of appropriate scientific knowledge

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING

Senior Certificate with Matriculation Exemption or equivalent university admission qualification.

Additional requirements

The candidate should have obtained an aggregate of not less than 60% for the Senior Certificate and have passed Mathematics and Physical Science with at least a D symbol on the Higher Grade or C symbol on the standard Grade.

The Bachelor of Dental Surgery graduate will be able to:

1. Have a good grasp of the theoretical background of the core aspects of all branches of clinical dentistry

2. Demonstrate competence in the basic skills in the performance of clinical studies, commensurate with national and international standards

3. Demonstrate the ability to apply this knowledge to the welfare of the patient

4. Meet the criteria of the Health Professions Council of South Africa for registration as a general dental practitioner

The Bachelor of Dental Surgery graduate will demonstrate:

1. The ability to apply theoretical knowledge in the diagnosis and treatment of clinical problems

2. An awareness of the legal, ethical and social responsibility of work in this field

ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

1. Preparation of clinical case reports demonstrating the ability to find and use demonstrating the ability to find and use relevant scientific knowledge in a problem solving context.

2. Successfully demonstrate the ability to complete patient treatment plan in consultation with the patient and other members of the health team

3. Independent management of at least 10 diverse comprehensive clinical cases as appropriate at the level of a general dental practitioner.

4. Regular assessment by means of written, oral, practical and clinical tests

5. Yearly examination (written, oral, clinical) with external examiners of national and international repute in attendance

Preparation of case reports on patients which include:

Methods of examining patients

Differential and or final diagnosis

Treatment planning

Execution of treatment

Regular class tests and formal examinations, including oral and written tests, performance of clinical procedures under supervision, and objectively structured clinical examinations (OSCE`s)

Formal (examined) courses in dental jurisprudence, ethics and sociology

INTEGRATED ASSESSMENT

During the final year candidates have to prepare and submit reports on patients illustrating their ability to integrate all the relevant knowledge and skill (encompassing examination procedures, diagnosis of a variety of clinical problems and treatment methods). These reports are illustrated with photographs, radiographs and other material where relevant and are subjected to peer review in an open presentation to class members and staff. Specific attention is paid to written presentation, theoretical knowledge (including relevant scientific literature), diagnosing ability, treatment planning and treatment procedure.
