PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION

To provide qualifiers with graduate-level knowledge, specific skills and applied competence in a number of fields of natural sciences and mathematics that provide opportunities for continued personal intellectual growth, gainful economic activity and rewarding contributions to society.

To provide South Africa with Science and Mathematics teachers who have a practical competence that will enable aspiring professional educators to justify or change their practice by reflecting on it on the basis of a preliminary understanding of educational theory.

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING

A Senior Certificate with Matriculation Exemption with a pass in Mathematics HG or 50% on the SG as well as either Physical Science or Biology.

ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

The Faculty has adopted a Continuous Assessment System. Assessment consists of a number of assessment events administered throughout the year and a variety of assessment instruments are used (for example, tests, essay, practical reports, project reports)

ARTICULATION OPTIONS

Theoretically this qualification should articulate vertically with all qualifications in the same discipline at level 7 of all other higher education institutions. It will be the additional criteria that these other higher education institutions will apply which will determine whether students from the Faculty of Science at the University of the Western Cape will be admitted to the next qualification at other institutions.

It is possible for students, should they decide not to continue with the BSc (Education) to change to any other BSc programme offered by UWC or any other university.

MODERATION OPTIONS

Modules in the first year and the second year of studies will be moderated by an independent internal second examiner appointed by Senate. Modules at the third and subsequent level will be moderated through an external examiner appointed by Senate. The moderating body for this qualification is the Council for Higher Education.

CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS

An assessor will have at least a Masters degree in the appropriate subject plus a minimum of three to five years experience in teaching the course.
