PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
The first purpose of the qualification is to provide qualifiers with graduate level knowledge, specific skills and applied competence in the field of architectural design and documentation.

The second purpose of the qualification is to allow qualifiers to register as professionals

The third purpose of the qualification is to provide South Africa with significant numbers of graduates in the field of architectural design and construction so as to ensure that the numbers of local leadership are broadened and innovative and knowledge-based economic and scholarly activity is widened.

The fourth purpose of the qualification is to provide South Africa with a number of graduates, who through clear, continuous and growing understanding and continued studies towards professional status, can move into the fields of related professional activity, for example Landscape Architecture, Project Management, Urban Design, Environmental Management and such like.

A fifth purpose of the qualification is to provide South Africa with a corpus of graduates who will have a clear and growing understanding of architectural design, history, theory, construction and computer skills and transfer such knowledge as teachers.

Learning outcomes:
A B Arch graduate is schooled in all technical and theoretical aspects of the discipline of architecture, can assess and translate the requirements of clients into socially answerable creative design, resolved the design responsibly through meeting physical demands and constraints of environment and construction, produce and/or facilitate all documentation for the execution of the design, and administer the construction to finality.

Critical cross-field outcomes:
Outcomes of a course devoted to architecture require that the qualifier must have the ability in:
  • Identifying and solving problems in which design responses display that responsible decisions using critical and creative thinking have been made;
  • Working effectively with others as a member of a team, group, organisation, community
  • Collecting, analysing, organising and critically evaluating information
  • Communicating effectively using visual, mathematical and language skills in the modes of graphic, oral and written persuasion;
  • Using the human and natural sciences and technologies effectively and critically, showing responsibility towards the environment and well-being of others;
  • Demonstrating and understanding of the world as a set of related systems by recognising that problem-solving contexts do not exist in isolation;
  • Contributing to the full personal development and actualisation of each learner and the social and economic development of the society at large, by making it the underlying intention of the programme of learning to make an individual aware of the importance of:
    - Reflecting on and exploring a variety of strategies to learn more effectively;

  • ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA 
    In the history and theory of architecture understanding is demonstrated through the written and illustrated testing of factual and analytical understanding of the qualifier, through the critical understanding demonstrated in oral evaluation.
    The understanding of construction is demonstrated by the qualifier by way of written and illustrated testing of factual and analytical understanding as well as the ability to arrive at solutions from first principles through rational calculation through to critical understanding in design application
    In practice management the qualifier demonstrates understanding by way of written testing of factual and theoretical application
    In the field of design understanding is demonstrated by submission of a portfolio of design work by the qualifier submitted at regular intervals for evaluation by a panel of assessors comprising internal and external evaluators
    In elective subjects qualifiers must meet the requirements as set by the responsible department/faculty and the required credits
