PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION

1. To consolidate and deepen what has been learned in the first degree (BscPhysio) and to undertake advanced study in a chosen field of specialisation in Physiotherapy.

2. To acquire the necessary advanced professional skills to operate successfully in such an environment.

3. To establish a proper base for undertaking research through the acquirement of the necessary research skills and tools.

4. To stimulate interest in academic study and research in Physiotherapy and to ensure a constant supply of well-equipped professional, critical thinkers and socially aware leaders for both the public and private health sector.

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING

Senior Certificate with Matriculation Exemption or equivalent university admission qualification.

First degree: BSc Physio or equivalent approved by Senate.

Registration with the Professional Board of the Health Professions Council of South Africa as a Physiotherapist in South Africa.

The Honours graduate will:

1. Collect, analyse, organise and critically evaluate in depth knowledge in the field of physiotherapy

2. Demonstrate, as an advanced physiotherapy practitioner, responsible participation in the promotion of the quality of life of the local community, the South African population and the global community.

3. Demonstrate deep understanding of cultural, religious and ethnic diversity and its influence on the health care consumer's perception of health and illness.

4. Identify and find solutions to health related problems through basic research and the use of critical and creative thinking

5. Demonstrate leadership within the health care team and groups in the community

6. Demonstrate the capacity for responsible and effective organisation, management and delivery of physiotherapy services

7. Communicate effectively with health service consumers and professional colleagues using visual, verbal, nonverbal and written skills.

The Honours graduate in Physiotherapy will have:

1. Confident, systematic and in-depth knowledge of their chosen area of specialisation in physiotherapy and an awareness of a variety of contexts in which it may apply

2. An understanding of the principles and concepts underpinning the field of study and its boundaries and limitations

3. Knowledge of advanced investigative methods

4. An overview of recent, relevant research in the chosen field of physiotherapy

5. Familiarity with the opportunities, challenges, demands and code of conduct of the profession of physiotherapy associated with the field of specialisation.

ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

The Honours graduate in physiotherapy will be able to:

1. Analyse, reformat, synthesis and evaluate a wide range of information.

2. Effectively implement research in the chosen field that will with stand the scrutiny of peers and contribute to evidence based practise.

3. Solve problems and justify and explain conclusions within the scope of the chosen field of the discipline of physiotherapy

4. Argue critically and convincingly

5. Confidently select and apply management strategies in the context of the chosen field of specialisation.

6. Communicate effectively in a form appropriate to the profession

7. Relate theory to practice and vice versa

8. Accurately assess with justification own and other's work

The Honours graduate in physiotherapy will demonstrate the:

1. Ability for independent study via the completion of papers and or assignments

2. Professional and ethical working relations within the health sciences profession.

Assessment of the above is done by a range of formative and summative assessment methods such as clinical portfolios, workplace assessments, conducting of presentations, written and oral examinations.

A system of external moderation is laid down by the Professional Board of Physiotherapy of the Health Professions Council of South Africa. External assessors are invited from other Universities as well as experts in the field of interest

The academic staff of the university of Stellenbosch will be used in a manner in accordance with the quality assurance system of the university.
