PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
The qualification represents a combination of specific and critical learning outcomes with the purpose of providing qualifying learners with the following:

1. Applied competencies in order to practise as an independent nurse practitioner

2. Foundation for further learning in respect of post-basic diplomas and Honours or Master's degrees.


The qualification adds significant value to the qualifying learner in terms of enrichment of the person through:

3. Awarding of a degree certificate and recognition of the professional status of the graduate through applicable registration with the South African Nursing
Council in one or more of the following:
General, Psychiatric ND community Nurse and Midwife, Nurse Manager and Nurse Educator.

4. Increase marketability and employability, as the graduate can be employed in any of the following clinical areas:
Medical, surgical, psychiatric, community and midwifery services
Public and private sector health care services

The qualification provides benefits for the South African community and economy by:

6. Correcting past inequities and inequalities, in that persons of all population and ethnic groups are eligible to obtain this qualification, and in so doing, transforming the profile of South African nursing graduates

d). CLINICAL NURSING OUTCOMES:
The qualifying learner will be able to:

    -Elementary Physics and Chemistry

  • Deliver a holistic and comprehensive health care service within a bio-psychosocial model individuals, groups and communities

  • Utilise knowledge and educational skills to fulfil the role of a nurse educator.

    The qualifying learner will be able to demonstrate:
  • Appropriate verbal and non-verbal communication to ensure effective interpersonal interaction
  • Assertive behaviour as advocate for self and others
  • Therapeutic communication skills in order to support individuals, groups and families

  • Effective application and use of technological aids and information systems


    g). PROFESSIONAL AND NURSING MANAGEMENT OUTCOMES:
  • Be able to practise as an independent nurse practitioner within the South African context at all levels of health care and in both public and private sectors

    h). NURSING RESEARCH OUTCOMES:

    The qualifying learner will have the capacity to:

    1. Develop the scientific knowledge base of the nursing profession and explore the fundamental elements of the scientific research process

    2. Participate in any of the phases of research and to commence post-graduate studies 

  • ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA 
    1).

    Outcomes will be assessed as follows:

    1. The assessment used for the BCur ensures that the purpose of the qualification is achieved and meets the standard and level of achievement for NQF level 7,

    2. Within a problem-based learning context, a range of formative and summative assessment methods are used, such as portfolios, simulations, clinical workplace assessments, journal evaluations, case-studies, case presentations, peer-group and preceptor evaluations

    3. From the assessment of samples of cognitive, psychomotor and affective skills, generalising to the domain of the independent nurse practitioner, takes place in a judicious and planned way

    4. The criterion used to assess programme outcomes, is whether the information and conceptual content of the work, the qualifying learner submits for marking is accurate and valid.

    5. Competence in programme outcomes will be demonstrated if the qualifying learner shows:
  • The ability to correlate information and concepts learned in a range of modules
  • Proposes valid and appropriate solutions for a range of theoretical and practical problems

    6. To demonstrate competence in programme outcomes, a qualifying learner must be able to write logical and coherent reports and essays, undertake and successfully complete a supervised basic research project and satisfactorily answer examination and test questions

    7. The qualifying learner's written and oral presentations must be of an acceptable standard in terms of the use of Afrikaans or English language and the structural organisation of presentations

    d). CLINICAL ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
  • The qualifying learner is comprehensively assessed in each of the following disciplines:
  • General Nursing
  • Community Nursing
  • Mental Health and Mental Illness Nursing
  • Mother, Child and Women's Health Nursing
  • Professional Practise and Management
  • Education
  • Based on the assessment criteria as indicated in point 3.1, each of the above disciplines contains a comprehensive set of theoretical and clinical competencies that are individually assessed. Both the theoretical and clinical assessment components must be independently passed with a minimum of 50%

    e). EDUCATIONAL ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    The qualifying learner must demonstrate competence in:
  • Flexibility in the use of appropriate strategies and methods in educational presentations
  • The ability to independently gather, logically organise and critically appraise information.

    f). COMMUNICATION ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    The qualifying learner must demonstrate competence in:
  • Educational, therapeutic, support, and activity focussed groups
  • Educational, assessment and counselling interviews
  • Presentations and written assignments
  • Auditing of documentation


    g). PROFESSIONAL AND NURSING MANAGEMENT ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    The qualifying learner must demonstrate:
  • Clinical, professional and managerial competence in the following areas:
  • Primary, secondary and tertiary health care services
  • Medical, surgical, paediatric, psychiatric, obstetric and community health care services
  • Accuracy in the identification and documentation of needs, problems and appropriate nursing interventions
  • Decision making ability based on legally and ethically sound creative and critical thinking within the statutory framework of nursing science.
  • Systematic and appropriate problem-solving ability
  • The ability to interact with other team members

    h). NURSING RESEARCH ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    The qualifying learner must demonstrate competence in:
  • The initiation, planning, implementation, reporting and presentation of a basic group research project that is supervised.


    INTEGRATED ASSESSMENT

    Different formative and summative assessment methods are used in all the modules of the programme to evaluate applied competence. The degree of application of competencies within each assessment is determined by the level of the module and the complexity of the content.

    The qualifying learner must meet all the standards of the educational programme and the minimum requirements for registration with the South African Nursing Council. 

  • ARTICULATION OPTIONS 
    Articulation possibilities exist between the accredited basic nursing programme offered by the various Higher Educational Institution in South Africa. Learners retain appropriate credits.

    A qualifying learner that does not complete the entire course may register in the discipline(s) where the minimum requirements are met and as approved by the South African Nursing Council.

    Obtaining the BCur qualification enables the qualifying learner to obtain further post-basic and post-graduate qualifications.

    Vertical articulation is possible with other programmes e.g. Diploma in Nursing (Education, Administration, Critical Care, Post-basic Psychiatric Nursing, Community Nursing, Midwifery, etc) as well as articulation with Honours or Master's programmes.

    Vertical articulations is possible with Honours / Masters programmes unrelated to nursing e.g. Psychology Honours, Honours or Master in Rehabilitation, etc.

    Horizontal articulation is enhanced with access to a variety of other related generic courses such as Public Health and Business Administration. 

    MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • The Department of Nursing Science of the University of Stellenbosch has a system of internal peer review and moderation of the content and standard of the various Nursing Science disciplines.
  • All personnel in the Department utilise the expertise of experts in their specific fields of specialisation on an ongoing basis through ad hoc lectures, specific inputs and consultations.
  • The research, educational, community participation and administrative functions of staff are evaluated annually by means of a standard university performance appraisal system.
  • Accreditation by the Professional Board (South African Nursing Council) 

  • CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS 
    The academic staff of the Department of Nursing Science of the university of Stellenbosch must be:
  • In possession of a basic and or appropriate post-graduate degree(s) in Nursing Science,
  • Registered with the South African Nursing Council
  • In possession of at least a Diploma in Nursing Education.

    Assessors (who will usually be staff members of the Department of Nursing Science of the university of Stellenbosch) will be used in a manner in accordance with the quality assurance system of the university.

    The South African Nursing Council currently exists as a Accreditation Body for nursing training.
    On a regular basis the educational programme, facilities and personnel undergo accreditation.
