| PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION |
| The qualification represents a combination of specific and critical learning outcomes with the purpose of providing qualifying learners with the following:
1. Applied competencies in order to practise as an independent nurse practitioner 2. Foundation for further learning in respect of post-basic diplomas and Honours or Master's degrees. The qualification adds significant value to the qualifying learner in terms of enrichment of the person through: 3. Awarding of a degree certificate and recognition of the professional status of the graduate through applicable registration with the South African Nursing Council in one or more of the following: General, Psychiatric ND community Nurse and Midwife, Nurse Manager and Nurse Educator. 4. Increase marketability and employability, as the graduate can be employed in any of the following clinical areas: Medical, surgical, psychiatric, community and midwifery services Public and private sector health care services The qualification provides benefits for the South African community and economy by: 5. Providing the community with an essential health care worker 6. Correcting past inequities and inequalities, in that persons of all population and ethnic groups are eligible to obtain this qualification, and in so doing, transforming the profile of South African nursing graduates The qualification strives to fulfil the objectives of the National Qualification Framework by: 7. Playing an active role, and forming an integral part, of the national framework or learning by facilitating admission, mobility and progression within tertiary education and occupational opportunities 8. Promoting quality of education and contributing to the comprehensive personal development of each qualifying learner and the social and economic development of the community. 9. Increasing articulation possibilities with advanced nursing programmes and admission to related courses such as Psychology Honours, Master's in Rehabilitation, etc. |

| 1). GENERIC / CRITICAL CROSS FIELD OUTCOMES
The qualifying learner will: 1. Effectively apply health sciences and technology and demonstrate responsible behaviour for the well-being of health service consumers and their environment 2. Demonstrate an understanding of health service delivery within an appropriate model 3. Demonstrate, as a health service provider, responsible participation in the promotion of the quality of life of the local community, the South African population and the global community 4. Demonstrate sensitivity to cultural, religious and ethnic diversities and their influences on the health care consumer's perception of health and illness 5. Identify, and find solutions to, health-related problems through responsible decision-making and the use of critical and creative thinking 6. Work effectively with other members of the health care team and with groups in the community 7. Be capable of organising and managing all nursing activities effectively and responsibly 8. Reflect on and explore a variety of strategies to promote effective self-directed learning. 2). SPECIFIC OUTCOMES Programme outcomes include: a). The development of a community-orientated approach in the qualifying learner to provide for the changing needs of a growing and multicultural society c). The development of leadership skills and the acceptance of responsibility and accountability for own professional conduct. The learning content encompasses the minimum requirements for registration with the South African Nursing Council. d). CLINICAL NURSING OUTCOMES: The qualifying learner will be able to: -Psychology -Anatomy and Physiology -Elementary Physics and Chemistry -Human Resource Management -Pharmacology The qualifying leaner must demonstrate competence in: The following skills and techniques within a clinical environment: -Analytical and critical cognitive skills -Therapeutic communication skills -Psychomotor skills and techniques -Affective skills e). | ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA |
| 1).
Outcomes will be assessed as follows: 1. The assessment used for the BCur ensures that the purpose of the qualification is achieved and meets the standard and level of achievement for NQF level 7, 2. Within a problem-based learning context, a range of formative and summative assessment methods are used, such as portfolios, simulations, clinical workplace assessments, journal evaluations, case-studies, case presentations, peer-group and preceptor evaluations 3. From the assessment of samples of cognitive, psychomotor and affective skills, generalising to the domain of the independent nurse practitioner, takes place in a judicious and planned way 4. The criterion used to assess programme outcomes, is whether the information and conceptual content of the work, the qualifying learner submits for marking is accurate and valid. 5. Competence in programme outcomes will be demonstrated if the qualifying learner shows: 6. To demonstrate competence in programme outcomes, a qualifying learner must be able to write logical and coherent reports and essays, undertake and successfully complete a supervised basic research project and satisfactorily answer examination and test questions 7. The qualifying learner's written and oral presentations must be of an acceptable standard in terms of the use of Afrikaans or English language and the structural organisation of presentations 2). NURSING RESEARCH ASSESSMENT CRITERIA The qualifying learner must demonstrate competence in: INTEGRATED ASSESSMENT Different formative and summative assessment methods are used in all the modules of the programme to evaluate applied competence. The degree of application of competencies within each assessment is determined by the level of the module and the complexity of the content. The qualifying learner must meet all the standards of the educational programme and the minimum requirements for registration with the South African Nursing Council. |
| ARTICULATION OPTIONS |
| Articulation possibilities exist between the accredited basic nursing programme offered by the various Higher Educational Institution in South Africa. Learners retain appropriate credits.
A qualifying learner that does not complete the entire course may register in the discipline(s) where the minimum requirements are met and as approved by the South African Nursing Council. Obtaining the BCur qualification enables the qualifying learner to obtain further post-basic and post-graduate qualifications. Vertical articulation is possible with other programmes e.g. Diploma in Nursing (Education, Administration, Critical Care, Post-basic Psychiatric Nursing, Community Nursing, Midwifery, etc) as well as articulation with Honours or Master's programmes. Vertical articulations is possible with Honours / Masters programmes unrelated to nursing e.g. Psychology Honours, Honours or Master in Rehabilitation, etc. Horizontal articulation is enhanced with access to a variety of other related generic courses such as Public Health and Business Administration. |

| The academic staff of the Department of Nursing Science of the university of Stellenbosch must be:
Assessors (who will usually be staff members of the Department of Nursing Science of the university of Stellenbosch) will be used in a manner in accordance with the quality assurance system of the university. The South African Nursing Council currently exists as a Accreditation Body for nursing training. On a regular basis the educational programme, facilities and personnel undergo accreditation. |
