PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION

To prepare a student for a career in music teaching - either at a school or at a non-governmental institution, or both. It ensures that music graduates will be able to play a dynamic and creative role in music education through the exercise of their well developed musical skills

To prepare a student for a career in music performance/music industry. It ensures that music graduates will be able to play a dynamic and creative role in professions relating to the music industry through the exercise of their well developed musical skills

To provide South Africa with significant numbers of graduates in a music field in order to ensure that the local leadership base of innovative and knowledgeable musicians is spread equitably throughout the community.

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING

Learners who register for this qualification can play a musical instrument, sing, or do both.

Recognition of prior learning:
In the Music Department staff are aware that, although many learners do not register with a music background gained at school, that they do have learning experiences in music gained from their membership in church bands; community choirs; and other non-formal music learning environments.

An adequate level of music literacy has been demonstrated by the student and the language used is clear and understandable

Due attention has been paid to the analytical, stylistic, formalistic and compositional dimensions of the various musical genres

An adequate range of information sources has been accessed and the basic information technology has been mastered

Problems have been grasped in a holistic manner so that the various factors or determinants have been taken into account

For assignments and projects, evidence of an appropriate and adequate background investigation has been presented

Any solutions to problems that have been presented are plausible and practical

Students can proceed to a Masters degree in Music

MODERATION OPTIONS

Modules in the foundation year and the third year level of studies will be moderated by an independent internal second examiner appointed by Senate. Modules of the second and fourth year will be moderated through an external examiner appointed by Senate.

CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS

An assessor will have at least a Honours or Master's degree in music plus a minimum of three to five years' experience in teaching the course
