PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
The purpose of the programme is to focus on the education and training of Library and Information Service personnel while maintaining well-recognized international standards in its curricula. In order to redress the inequities of the past the Department lays great emphasis on helping individuals from the educationally and economically disadvantaged communities to acquire professional education and training in Library and Information Science. It aims to help conserve and explore the environmental and cultural resources of the Southern African region and to encourage a wide awareness of them in the community by making its graduates not only literate in the printed and electronic sources of information but also in the vast wealth of information in the oral traditions. It strives to equip graduates with knowledge and skills to enter the labour market and serve both the technologically advantaged and disadvantaged sectors. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
Students in possession of a Matriculation Certificate, an exemption certificate of the Joint Matriculation Board or (recognition of prior learning) prior learning, approved by the Board of Studies of the Faculty of Arts, will be admitted to the Foundation Year.

Students will develop basic library and information service skills together with skills of critical thinking and debate, reading and interpretation and IT competencies required in the Information Society. This programme should also enable students to specialize in specific areas of interest and competence. Skills include how to acquire, search for, use and disseminate information and how to reproduce it. 

ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA 
  • An adequate level of text comprehension has been demonstrated by the student and the language used is clear and understandable
  • Due attention has been paid to the rhetorical, stylistic, grammatical, technical and graphic dimensions of communicative situations and genres
  • An adequate range of information sources has been accessed and the basic information technology has been mastered
  • Problems have been grasped in a holistic manner so that the various factors or determinants have been taken into account
  • The concepts and terminology of the discipline have been correctly understood and used
  • For assignments and projects, evidence of an appropriate and adequate background investigation has been presented
  • Any solutions to problems that have been presented are plausible and practical

    Integrated assessment:

    A variety of assessment procedures will be used. These will include the following:
    assignments, contributions to class debates, examinations, tests, peer assignments, practical field work.

    ARTICULATION OPTIONS 
    Students who have completed 480 credit points may continue with a M.Bibl by thesis only or the structured M.Bibl plus a mini-thesis or a researched project. 

    MODERATION OPTIONS 
    Modules in the foundation year and the third year level of studies will be moderated by an independent internal second examiner appointed by Senate. Modules of the second year and fourth year will be moderated through an external examiner appointed by Senate. 

    CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS 
    All forms of assessment are done by examiners appointed by Senate. An assessor will have at least an Honours, Maters of Doctorate degree in Library and Information Science. Experience in teaching LIS or working in a library or in information service, is a prerequisite.
