The qualification content is currently being updated for the qualifications with the status “Registered-data under construction” or showing “DETAILS UNDER CONSTRUCTION” to ensure compliance with SAQA’S Policy and Criteria for the registration of qualifications and part-qualifications on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) (As amended, 2022). These qualifications are re-registered until 30 June 2027 and can legitimately be offered by the institutions to which they are registered.

 

In all of the tables in this document, both the pre-2009 NQF Level and the NQF Level is shown. In the text (purpose statements, qualification rules, etc), any references to NQF Levels are to the pre-2009 levels unless specifically stated otherwise.  

PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
The primary of this qualification is to provide qualifying learners with:

Practical Competence: The learners should be able to demonstrate their ability in the following skills, and to demonstrate informed decisions, based on these skills: translation skills, research skills. All skills at this advanced level should demonstrate growth and continuous progression in the field of Greek.

Foundation competence: The learners should be able to demonstrate understanding, analysis and interpretation of: skills, language formulation and communication, analysis of texts. All skills at this advanced level should demonstrate growth and continuous progression in the field of Greek.

Reflexive Competence: The learners should demonstrate the following abilities: innovative and creative thinking: reflective thinking. All skills on this advanced level should demonstrate growth and continuous progression in the field of Greek. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
Recognition of Prior Learning:
All potential learners who claim to have achieved the entrance level of this qualification, through experience, need to apply to the Accreditation Committee of the Faculty of Arts. Recognition will be made according to the Faculty prescriptions and guidelines.
Potential learners who want to be credited for prior learning and or experience for a particular module or modules, need to apply in writing to the Departmental Chairperson of the department which offers the module or modules they want to be credited for, as well as the basis on which they believe the accreditation should be granted.
The principles of RPL are subscribed to and will be implemented in a flexible manner. The principle of flexible and open access will, however, be offset against the provision that this is not to be to the detriment of the potential learner, and that his/her chances to succeed must be reasonable.
The Committee will assess learner's competencies in order to determine whether they are eligible for a) access to, b) advanced placement in, or c) recognition of status for this qualification.

Entry Requirements:
The minimum entry requirement for this qualification is:
  • Bachelor of Arts Honours in Greek, NQF Level 8.
    Or
  • Bachelor of Arts Honours in Classical Culture, NQF Level 8.

    The learner should be able to:
    1. Solve critical text problems, also in the form of a research article, based on related knowledge and theories. Reflect on his/her ability of problem-solving. All skills on this advanced level should demonstrate growth and continuous progression in the field of Greek.
    2. Work with other Postgraduate learners and lectures in Greek, in order to promote research (seminars). All skills on this advanced level should demonstrate growth and continuous progression in the field of Greek.
    3. Do independent research, based on relevant research methodology and reflective examinations. All skills on this advanced level should demonstrate growth and continuous progression in the field of Greek.
    4. Do basic and medium research work, including research in the fields of Greek linguistics, philogy and culture (history). All skills on this advanced level should demonstrate growth and continuous progression in the fields of Greek.
    5. Orally and in writing, communicate at an advanced level (in the case of Modern Greek) and/or read Greek at an advanced level (Ancient and/ or modern Greek). All skills on this advanced should demonstrate growth and continuous progression in the field of Greek.
    6. Demonstrate a sound knowledge of specialised literature, and have skills to find and use such literature. All skills on this advanced level should demonstrate growth and continuous progression in the field of Greek.
    7. Acquire a sound sensitivity in the fields of Greek aesthetics and culture. All skills on this advanced level should demonstrate growth and continuous progression in the field of Greek.
    8. To strengthen his/her responsibility as a citizen thorough knowledge of Greek democracy (and its evolution).
    9. Improve employed skills in the field of languages, translation and (in the case of Ancient Greek) theology. All skills on this advanced level should demonstrate growth and continuous progression in the field of Greek.
    10. Display his/her knowledge in the field of Greek language effectively and appropriately. All skills on this advanced level should demonstrate growth and continuous progression in the field of Greek. 

    ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA 
    Does the learner:
    1. Display - at an advanced level - a sound knowledge of handling text critical problems? Demonstrate an ability to analyse, translate and discuss appropriately such a text on an advanced level?
    2. Demonstrate an ability to communicate effectively with others, in a written and/or oral manner, at an advanced level in the field of Greek?
    3. Show his/her acquisition of several teamwork skills on an advanced level?
    4. Have the skills to write (a) research article(s) appropriately, at an advanced level?
    5. Display a sound translation technique at an advanced level?
    6. Reveal a detailed knowledge of specialized literature at an advanced level?
    7. Display a sound aesthetic sensitivity at an advanced level?
    8. Have the knowledge and experience to become a better citizen?
    9. Display sound language skills in the field of ancient/Christian and/or Modern Greek at an advanced level?
    10. Display his/her knowledge in the field of Greek language at an advanced level effectively and appropriately?

    Integrated Assessment:
  • Formative assessment practices that will be implemented;
  • Essays, seminars, translation exercises, presentations;
  • Summative assessment practices that will be implemented;

    Integrated assessment, focusing on the achievement of the Exit-Level Outcomes, will be done by means of a final assessment of the research dissertation. 

  • ARTICULATION OPTIONS 
    This qualification offers both possibilities of horizontal and vertical articulation.

    Horizontal Articulation:
  • Master of Arts in Classical Cultures, NQF Level 9.

    Vertical Articulation:
  • Doctor of Philosophy in Greek, NQF Level 10.
