| PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION |
* The specialist skills to select, analyse and synthesize sources and write a thesis that constitutes a unique contribution to the subject knowledge in the particular field of research; * The skills to acquire, apply and reflect on specialist linguistic and/or literary theory relevant to the African languages; * The ability to compile a specialist cohesive report on a selected topic on the field of linguistics or literary study; * The necessary skills to scrutinize, synthesize and apply the specialist learnt linguistic principles to language data from the African language of specialization; * With the necessary skills to scrutinize, synthesize and apply the specialist learnt principles of literary analysis to any literary text from the African language of specialization; * With the necessary skills to conduct specialist field work in the language or literature of specialization. * The necessary skills to apply specialist strategic and analytical thinking skills. |

| The competencies of this programme entail:
* Equipping the competent learner to select, analyse and synthesize sources and write a thesis that constitutes a unique contribution to the advanced subject knowledge in the particular field of research * Enabling the competent learner to acquire, apply and reflect on advanced linguistic and/or literary theory relevant to the African languages * Enabling the competent learner to compile a cohesive report on a selected topic in the field of linguistic or literary study * Equipping the competent learner with the necessary skills to scrutinize and apply the learnt linguistic principles to language data from the African language of specialization * Equipping the competent learner with necessary advanced skills to scrutinize, synthesize and apply the learnt advanced principles of literary analysis to any literary text from the African language specialization * Equipping the competent learner with the necessary advanced skills to conduct field-work in the language or literature of specialization * Equipping the competent learner with the necessary advanced skills to apply strategic and analytical thinking skills 2. An MA degree (NQF level 8) with a minimum of 256 credits at level 8 specialising in an African (Bantu) language is a prerequisite. The learner will acquire the following competences: * Scientific research skills; * Critical reasoning; * Problem solving skills * Analysis; * Evaluation and synthesizing of conflicting ideas; * Effective communication and reporting; * Making an advanced and unique contribution to the subject knowledge. 3. Recognition of prior learning A prospective learner who does not meet the general requirements for admission to this programme may apply for admission in terms of the general principles and procedures pertaining to the recognition of prior learning at RAU. The procedures pertaining to RPL entail the following: * The Dean of the Faculty of Arts is co-ordinates the application for RPL. * Applications must be forwarded in writing. * A specific amount is payable for the assessment of the application. * The application is assessed according to criteria determined by the Board of Faculty of the Arts and includes the following: * The committee will assess learners' competencies in order to determine whether they are eligible for a) access to, b) advanced placement in, or c) recognition of status for this qualification. |

Demonstrate his/her ability to be innovative and creative in terms of the application of the acquired cognitive and practical skills Formative assessment practices that will be implemented Constructive feedback and discussions on the submitted work will constitute the major form of formative assessment. A doctoral committee will meet with doctoral candidates to render assistance where necessary. The learner also has to offer seminars on the selected topic to the staff of the department and fellow postgraduate learners. The learner, furthermore, has to prepare and submit an article for submission to an accredited journal on a selected topic from the field of research covered in the thesis. Summative assessment practices that will be implemented Integrated assessment, focusing on the achievement of the exit-level outcomes, will be done by means of a doctoral examination and the thesis will constitute summative assessment. |

| 1. Access to qualifications on a lower level
Candidates who have completed modules in an MA in African Languages course at other South African universities will be granted credit. 2. Access to qualifications on the same level Graduates may continue with their doctoral studies at another university if they so wish. 3. Access to qualifications on a higher level A successful candidate may continue with another doctoral qualification or with postdoctoral studies after the completion of this qualification. |

| 1. What external examination process will be implemented?
External examiners are appointed by the Dean of the Faculty of Arts on the recommendation of the Chairperson of the Department to examine the thesis upon submission. 2. How many external examiners/moderators will be appointed for this qualification and from which type of institutions or professional bodies will they typically be? At least two external examiners who are lecturers (or former lecturers) from a higher education institution, with subject expertise in the academic field covered by the particular thesis will be appointed to assess the thesis. |

Only lecturers from other higher education institutions with a doctoral qualification who are experts in the field of African languages (in the particular field of the research topic selected by the candidate) will be appointed as external examiners for the thesis. 2. Criteria regarding job or learning area experience Only a person who is or has been a lecturer in African languages at a higher education institution and who has obtained a qualification at doctoral level will be appointed as an external examiner. 3. Criteria regarding experience of or exposure to assessment An external examiner must have gained experience as an examiner at a higher education institution and must be familiar with the particular field of research before he/she can be appointed as an external examiner for the thesis. |
