PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION

A qualifying learner at this level is competent in process design and development and will illustrate technical management competence thus contributing to the needs of the metallurgical and mining industry. The qualified person will be able to register with ECSA as a professional technologist.

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING

Descriptive Entry Level: Capable of describing, explaining and comparing: 1. Metallurgical processes 2. Process efficiencies The applicant should be in possession of a qualification at NQF Level 6 in Extraction Metallurgy and should have obtained at least 60% aggregate for the subjects.

The qualification will be awarded to a learner who has provided evidence to the satisfaction of the assessors that the stated competence of the qualification, as detailed in the specified outcomes, or through education and training in a single provider's learning programme, or through experiential learning that complies with the stated specified outcomes.

EXIT LEVEL OUTCOMES

The qualifying learner should have the competence to: Initiate and optimise a range of requirements in metallurgical processes. Communicate effectively through reports, presentations, drawings and standards Manage finance/budget material, manpower, equipment and technology within the metallurgical field. Specified Outcomes: The qualifying learner depending on his/her field of specialisation will have the ability to: Apply technical and scientific principles to a metallurgical environment Describe and specify the assumptions made in the development of the above-mentioned principles and their limits of applicability Collect, analyse, organise and critically evaluate and compare information, in order to assess the situation on plants and in processes Calculate and predict process parameters and outcomes Show responsibility towards safety, health and the environment. Examiners are appointed by the Senate on recommendation of the Vice Rector and Dean concerned. Moderators are appointed by the Senate on recommendation of the Vice Rector and Dean concerned. Moderators for terminating instructional offerings must be competent persons who are not members of staff. Moderators for non-terminating instructional offerings may be full-time or part-time lecturers and/or other competent persons.

As per the SAQA Board decision/s at that time, this qualification was Reregistered in 2009; 2012; 2015.

While South Africa still had Technikons, all of their qualifications were registered under the Committee of Technikon Principals. After the Technikons became Universities of Technology or merged with Universities, the qualifications were registered under each of these institutions, and the CTP qualifications fell away (hence the end date of 2006, above).
