The qualification content is currently being updated for the qualifications with the status “Registered-data under construction” or showing “DETAILS UNDER CONSTRUCTION” to ensure compliance with SAQA’S Policy and Criteria for the registration of qualifications and part-qualifications on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) (As amended, 2022). These qualifications are re-registered until 30 June 2027 and can legitimately be offered by the institutions to which they are registered.

 

In all of the tables in this document, both the pre-2009 NQF Level and the NQF Level is shown. In the text (purpose statements, qualification rules, etc), any references to NQF Levels are to the pre-2009 levels unless specifically stated otherwise.  

PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
The primary purpose of this qualification is to provide qualifying learners with intellectual competencies and practical skills in the acquisition, interpretation, understanding and application of logistics management principles. The learner should develop writing and creative thinking skills in the logistics field.

The learner should be able to take important decisions in the context of a logistics organisation, or the logistics function of a company, and to assess any internal or external or external decision impacting logistics management. The learner should also be able to reflect on their decisions and applications and to assess the effect thereof in the holistic context of logistics management. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
Recognition Of Prior Learning:
Recognition of prior learning in the case of learners not complying with the formal entry requirements will be conducted by the policy and guidelines of the University concerning the recognition of other forms of formal, informal and non-formal learning experience. Recognition takes place only where prior learning corresponds with the required NQF-level, and in terms of applied competencies relevant to the content and outcomes of the qualification. Through recognition of prior learning, learners may gain access, or advanced placement, or recognition of status, on condition that they continue their studies at this institution.

The minimum entry requirement for this qualification is:

    1. Evaluate and apply logistics management concepts and principles and identifying and analysing important issues and problems relating to logistics management strategies and policies, and proposing alternative courses of action and solutions.
    2. Work in a team with a variety of role players, including professional and administrative members of the logistics profession, as well as people on the grassroots level related to the logistics business.
    3. Act responsibly concerning activities undertaken in the course of their application of logistics management concepts and principles.
    4. Plan, undertake and present research in logistic, including gathering, analysing and integrating related information.
    5. Communicate effectively, orally and in writing, with different role players, applying principles of communication and reflecting on the communication skills applied.
    6. Utilise basic management technology appropriate to the logistics management environment.
    7. Reflect on the importance and role of the logistics profession, both on a micro- and a macro-level.
    8. Identify different learning strategies to acquire and improve the various skills and capabilities required of a logistics manager.
    9. Contribute to the level of professionalism and expertise in, and effectiveness and efficiency of, the logistics profession; thus positively impacting on the economy.
    10. Demonstrate a positive approach to different communities and a sensitivity for the social, economic and cultural differences and needs, particularly concerning the distribution of goods, within these communities.
    11. Seek employment and entry into the logistics profession, and identify areas in which he/she may establish for himself/herself a specialised career in the logistics profession.
    12. Organise and co-ordinate, effectively and responsibly, resources and opportunities, especially own activities and taking into consideration the financial implications thereof. 

    ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA 
    The following associated assessment criteria apply across all Exit Level Outcomes:
  • Identify, analyse and solve important issues and problems, demonstrating critical and creative thinking about logistics management concepts and principles. The learner must evaluate and, where relevant, correctly apply theoretical concepts and approaches to the logistics management problems, strategies and policies; thus proposing alternative courses of action and solutions. The learner must be able to reflect on the applications and proposals made.
  • Display a team ship. The learner must demonstrate an acceptable level of social sensitivity in his/her relationships with others and work effectively in a team by implementing the relevant theory and reflecting on the implementation made. Finally, the learner must display a thorough knowledge and understanding of the various role-players involved in, or affected by, logistics.
  • Display an ability to act responsibly in interactions with other role players in the logistics profession. The learner must also display an ability to act responsibly in his /her application of logistics management concepts and principles.
  • Demonstrate the ability to plan and execute investigations in the field of logistics, including the correct gathering, analysing, and integrating of information on logistics management issues, by utilising relevant theoretical research principles and reflecting on the research undertaken. The learner must also be able to show that he/she can satisfactorily present the research undertaken.
  • Communicate, in an oraland written manner, including the usage of visual/graphic aids, with role players in the field of logistics by applying relevant theoretical principles of communication and reflecting on the application made.
  • Operate necessary management technology, in particular specified computer hardware and software including Internet and databases. The learner must use a computer as well as logistics-related databases.
  • The learner must explain the importance and role of logistics and the management thereof. The learner must also discern between importance and the roles of logistics at the various macro- and micro-levels.
  • The learner must show that he/she can identify the different skills and capabilities necessary in the execution of the activities and responsibilities of a logistics manager. The learner must identify different learning strategies or options to acquire and improve these skills and capabilities.
  • Explain the link between the number of logistics professionals and level of professionalism logistics, and the effectiveness and efficiency of the logistics profession and therefore of the economy. The learner must identify various roles that a more effective and efficient logistics profession will have in the economy and the impact that this will, in turn, have.
  • Demonstrate a positive approach towards various communities and a sensitivity for the social, economic and cultural differences within these communities, by identifying distribution needs of different communities, taking in consideration their various social, economic and cultural differences and therefore their differing needs and requirements with respect to logistics. The learner must show an ability to apply logistics concepts and principles to make proposals which will improve the circumstances of these communities.
  • Demonstrate acceptable employment-seeking skills for entry into the logistics profession by applying theoretical principles of employment-seeking and career-pathing and reflecting on the application thereof.
  • Display an ability to effectively and responsibly organise and coordinate resources and opportunities, in a prospective logistics job, by applying relevant theoretical aspects and reflecting on the application made, particularly with respect to their own activities. Finally, the learner must demonstrate a detailed knowledge of the financial implications of all organising and coordinating activities undertaken.

    Integrated Assessment:
    Formative assessment practices that will be implemented:

    Learners are continuously assessed using class assignments, essays, presentations, informal class tests and formal modular tests, in written or oral mode. The learner may also be required to do practical work (independent and in a group during study visits) which is evaluated by assessors. Also, the learner must also do peer assessment as well as the work of classmates, and reflect on the dynamics of this process.

    Summative assessment practices that will be implemented:
    Integrated assessment, focusing on the achievement of the exit-level outcomes, will be done using a 3-hour examination per module undertaken for the qualification, towards the end of that module.
