PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
The primary purpose of this qualification is to provide qualifying learners with applied competencies in the mastering, interpretation, analysis and application of energy, economic, technology, international policy formulation and evaluation principles.

The learner should be able to take strategic decisions in the context of an energy organisation, the wider energy industry and to access public sector policy decisions impacting on the energy sector. The learner should also be able to reflect on his/her managerial decisions and applications to access the effect thereof in the holistic context of energy management, strategic planning and regulation. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
Learners accessing this qualification should demonstrate their ability to read study material with understanding and interpret relevant literature on a graduate level. Learners must be able to communicate using academic Afrikaans/English in written/oral form. Learners must be able to study independently and to manage his/her own studies, applying effective time planning.

Access will be provided to the learner who is in possession of a baccalaureate degree on NQF-level 6, generating a minimum of 360 credits. A graduate learner from another university must comply with the following conditions before being admitted to the B.Com Honours (Energy Studies): depending on the pre-study, a supplementary study programme may be required as a condition for admission. Where a learner has not been formally exempted from a prerequisite course for the honours study, the Faculty may, on recommendation of the Director of the Institute for Energy Studies, grant exemption for requirements for admission to the honours study. Applications for admission to honours studies are finalised by the Director. Rejected applications must be submitted to the Faculty.

Current competencies in the field of energy studies that have been acquired by experiential learning in this field through related experience or studies, will be assessed. Such competencies may help the learner gain access to the programme, advance placement in the programme or recognition of the qualification on the condition of continuing education at this institution.

Can the leaner:

1. Demonstrate the ability to identify, analyse and solve complex issues and problems, demonstrating critical and creative thinking about energy issues, concepts and principles correctly? Evaluate and, where relevant, apply theoretical concepts and approaches correctly to interdisciplinary energy industry challenges, strategies and policies, thus proposing and implementing alternative courses of action and solutions? Reflect on the application made and access the success, or otherwise, thereof?

2. Display effective team ship? Demonstrate an acceptable level of social sensitivity in his/her relationships with others and work effectively in a team by implementing the relevant theory and reflecting on the implementation made? 8. Identify the different skills and capabilities necessary in the execution of the activities and responsibilities of an energy analyst, manager and/or regulator and explore different effective learning strategies to acquire these skills and capabilities?

9. Explain the link between the level of professionalism in the energy sector and the effectiveness and efficiency of the sector and therefore of the economy. Evaluate the role that a more effective and efficient energy sector will have in the economy and the impact that this will in turn have on the living standards of the population of the country (e.g. the redress of poverty, improved access to affordable energy)?

10. Demonstrate a positive approach towards the social, economic and cultural differences within communities? Analyse the particular energy needs of different communities, taking into consideration their various social, economic and cultural differences and therefore their differing energy needs and requirements. Apply energy industry concepts and principles to make proposals that will improve the circumstances of these communities?

11. Demonstrate acceptable employment seeking skills for entry into the energy sector by applying theoretical principles of employment seeking and career-pathing and reflecting on the application thereof?

12. Organise and co-ordinate resources and opportunities, particularly in the field of energy, by applying relevant theoretical aspects and reflecting on the application made? Demonstrate an acceptable level of responsibility and organisational ability with respect to their own activities? Formative assessment practices that will be implemented:

The learners will be continually assessed by means of class assignments, essays, presentations, class participation and a formal modular test, in written or oral mode, in each module. In addition, the learner must also assess himself/herself as well as the work of classmates, and reflect on the dynamics of the process.

Summative assessment practices that will be implemented:

Integrated assessment, focusing on the achievement of the exit-level outcomes, will be done by means of a three-hour exam per module undertaken for the qualification towards the end of the module. 

ARTICULATION OPTIONS 
1. Access to qualifications on a lower level:
The learner will be able to access to certificates on NQF level 5 or 6, diplomas on level 5 or 6 or a degree on NQF level 6 in the field of Energy Studies.

2. Access to qualifications on the same level:
This course is unique in South Africa and there are no opportunities for the learner who wishes to exit the course in mid-stream, i.e. change to another similar degree at RAU or another higher education institution or another B. Com Honours at RAU (or another higher education institution). Learners successfully completing the B. Com Honours (Energy Studies) may continue with another qualification, related to the learner 's previous tertiary qualifications at any higher education institution.

3. Access to qualifications on a higher level:
The learner who has successfully completed the B. Com Honours (Energy Studies) Qualification on NQF-level7 will have the opportunity for further study at a recognised higher education institution through a Masters study (M. Com or M. Phil or M. Tech) in energy studies on NQF-level 8. 

MODERATION OPTIONS 
Both internal and external examiners are appointed by the Dean of the Faculty of Natural Sciences upon recommendation by the Institute for Energy Studies. Once the internal examiners have assessed the examinations of the learner, the external examiners will undertake a similar exercise.
For every module of this qualification there will be at least one external examiner or second examiner who will be from within the University or a related organisation, with qualifications and job related or learning area experience. 

CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS 
Qualified assessors for assessing the learner undertaking this qualification, in terms of foundational, practical and reflexive outcomes per module, will be appointed by the Faculty of Natural Sciences of the University, upon recommendation of the Institute, based on the following criteria:

Assessors should be qualified in the area of energy studies and should be in possession of a relevant B.Com or B.Sc Honours degree on NQF level 7.
Assessors should have job and/or learning experience in the areas of energy economics, and technology.
Assessors should have experience in the field of education and training, particularly with respect to the subject of energy economics and technology. Assessors should also be well informed of what is required of them in connection to the assessment of the learner. Assessors must be SAQA accredited.
