PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION |
The primary purpose of this qualification is to develop the learner's applied competence in more advanced conceptualisation, critical reasoning, problem solving and processes of analysis and evaluation pertaining to the structure, usage and spread of the Afrikaans language, in historical context, and Afrikaans literature in its major genres and pertaining to Dutch literature by way of comparison to Afrikaans. |
LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING |
Recognition of Prior Learning:
Prospective learners in possession of a BA degree at level 6 plus a minimum of 360 credits in Afrikaans (and Dutch) as major from a South African university will be admitted to the course. ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA |
1. Display a thorough knowledge of, and evaluate and reflect on, literary or linguistic hypothesis.
2. Display a thorough knowledge of the corpus approach in linguistics and the textual approach in literature, extract linguistic or literary data from corpora and texts, and reflect on the process. 3. Display a thorough knowledge of the relationship between data and theory, relate theoretical analysis to data in a meaningful way or analyse raw data de novo, and reflect on the process. 4. Display a thorough knowledge of what constitutes conflicting view points or data, reconcile such view points or data in a meaningful synthesis, and reflect on the process. 5. Display a thorough knowledge of what constitutes clear, systematic, relevant and accurate formulation, apply this kind of formulation in verbal or written communication and reflect on the process. 6. Critically evaluate literary works, as well as literary and linguistic points of view, apply this evaluation in linguistic or literary analysis, and reflect on the process. 7. Display a thorough knowledge of literary appreciation, appreciate a literary work of art aesthetically and in relation to its intended readership or audience and reflect on the process. 8. Display a thorough passive knowledge of an older or other language form than modern Afrikaans, apply this knowledge by the way of translation or explicit exposition, and reflect on the process. 9. Display a thorough knowledge of text editing, edit a text according to current norms and reflect on the process. 10. Integrated Assessment: Formative assessment practices that will be implemented. Formative assessment is done by means of assignments, essays or semester tests or a combination of these, in all modules except Kreatiewe Afrikaans, where creative writing, translation or text editing is required. Summative assessment practices that will be implemented. Integrated assessment, focusing on the achievement of the exit-level outcomes, will be done by means of a written examination of three hours after each sequence of an A and a B module, except in the case of Kreatiewe Afrikaans, where a portfolio of creative writing, translation or edited texts is required at the end of Module B. |
