PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
Purpose:

The purpose of this Qualification is to provide middle and top-level officers/managers of the Department of Defence and other defence forces, who are graduated or equivalently qualified, and have completed the ENSP, with the opportunity to obtain a formal postgraduate Qualification at a Master's Degree level.

The purpose of this programme is to provide the Department of Defence and other defence forces with better-equipped and better-educated middle and top-level officers/managers through postgraduate education at master's degree level that will enhance their managerial competencies in the realm of defence and security management.

Rationale:

The proposed Master of Philosophy programme will capitalise on formal and informal learning opportunities pertaining to military professional development provided to middle and top-level officers/managers, who are graduated or equivalently qualified. The programme will also exploit their insight and experience appertaining to national and military security issues.

The competencies obtained through this qualification will empower middle and top-level officers/security managers to manage national and regional defence and security challenges effectively. This will enable such officers/security managers to make a significant contribution towards the establishment of national and regional platforms conducive to the promotion of peace and stability on the African continent, and so achieve optimal socio-economic development.

    Integrated assessment:

    Although there is no keystone module, final assignment or final-year project that covers the entire programme, effective integrated assessment does take place. Most modules are concluded by a written examination, covering the contents of the entire module. Oral presentations, contact sessions and research assignments (essays and thesis) are utilised to assess programme outcomes on a broad base, across the boundaries of the composing modules and disciplines.

    MODERATION OPTIONS 
    The University of Stellenbosch has a system of external moderation of assessment as well as external peer review and evaluation of departments. One of the aspects of the system is an evaluation of the standards and assessment practices of the department.

    The Faculty of Military Science has Programme Advisory Committees, comprising of senior South African National Defence Force officers and civilian academics that provide feedback on the relevance of programme contents.

    The introduction of this programme is the result of a need identified through consultation with the chief client, the South African National Defence Force, and the Military Academy Advisory Board.
