PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
Purpose:
  • To establish a firm Education, Training and Development foundation for members of the DoD who, on attaining the BMil degree, may further their military careers.
  • To provide an opportunity for articulation to postgraduate studies for prospective students who have successfully completed the degree.

    Rationale:

    The programme is formative and focused to equip selected officers of the South African National Defence and other foreign defence forces with the knowledge, skills and attitudes to manage the utilisation of technology within the socio-political and organisational environment of a department of defence.

    (The BMil-programme in Technology and Defence Management replaces two existing programmes, i.e. Programme in Technology and Management, and the Programme in War, Environment and Technology. The student numbers in the two existing programmes do no not support the existence of two separate programmes.).

    Integrated Assessment:

    All modules are concluded by a written examination, covering the contents of the entire module. In the case of Aeronautical Science the written examination is complemented with practical assessments on the integration of the entire module. The different subjects do however support and supplement the other providing insight into interdependency of disciplines and opportunity for integrated assessment. Oral presentations, class discussions, group work, practical evaluation and research essays are utilised to assess programme outcomes on a broad, integrated base.

    The University of Stellenbosch has a system of external moderation of assessment as well as external peer review and evaluation of departments. One of the aspects of the system is an evaluation of the standards and assessment practices of the department.

Some Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionaries have a lag in their recording systems for provider accreditation, in turn leading to a lag in notifying SAQA of all the providers that they have accredited to offer qualifications and unit standards, as well as any extensions to accreditation end dates. The relevant Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionary should be notified if a record appears to be missing from here.
