PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
The Doctorate of Commerce is a post-graduate degree which will:
  • Enable qualifiers to develop in-depth, advanced discipline specific skills and applied competence in Commerce and Industry and the Public sector that provide opportunities for continued personal intellectual growth, gainful employment and making a rewarding contribution to society.
  • Empower qualifiers to solve complex commercial problems in a focused way and to effectively manage and allocate resources, to communicate effectively and to contribute to knowledge and socio-economic transformation in a responsible and ethical manner.
  • Provide South Africa with significant numbers of highly skilled person power particularly from disadvantaged communities, in Commerce and Industry and in the Public Sector in order to ensure that the leadership base of innovative and knowledge-based economic and scholarly activity is strengthened and diversified.

    A Master's degree pegged M+4 or M+5 plus relevant work experience.

    4. Ideas and interests are articulated and promoted through effective Communication in oral and written modes.

    5. The extension of knowledge is contributed towards in Economic and Management Sciences through projects and programmes developed.

    6. An in-depth understanding and contribution to the socio-economic challenges of developing South Africa is demonstrated in an ethical and responsible manner.

    Integrated assessment:
    Assessment consists of a thesis with an internal specialist. 

    ARTICULATION OPTIONS 
    Vertical articulation - with all qualifications in the same discipline at level 8 at any other higher education institution. The quality of performance at level 8 may determine access at other institutions. 

    MODERATION OPTIONS 
    The recommended moderating body for this qualification is the Higher Education Quality Committee of the Council for Higher Education. 

    CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS 
    For all modules external, appropriately qualified assessors, who have doctoral degrees and at least three to five years' teaching experience in the relevant subjects, are drawn from other universities.
