The qualification content is currently being updated for the qualifications with the status “Registered-data under construction” or showing “DETAILS UNDER CONSTRUCTION” to ensure compliance with SAQA’S Policy and Criteria for the registration of qualifications and part-qualifications on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) (As amended, 2022). These qualifications are re-registered until 30 June 2027 and can legitimately be offered by the institutions to which they are registered.

In all of the tables in this document, both the pre-2009 NQF Level and the NQF Level is shown. In the text (purpose statements, qualification rules, etc), any references to NQF Levels are to the pre-2009 levels unless specifically stated otherwise.

PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION

1) To allow the graduate/professional/scholar to independently and critically analyse and transform research data and situation to improve patient care, management of clinical care, teaching/learning and research continuously.

2) To enable the graduate to apply research skills in solving problems and communicate findings orally and in publications

3) To enable the graduate to lead research an clinical efforts in the field and community

4) To enable the graduate to critically use technological and scientific advances in the field with responsibility

5) To enable the graduate to appreciate the interrelationships between systems in the process of problem solving

6) To enable the graduate through critical thinking, creativity, innovation and participation contribute to the development of the profession, community and country.

Formal: B. Physiotherapy/B.Sc and at least one year of postgraduate clinical work.

Formative:
1) Continuous assessment of literature, laboratory and clinical projects
2) Preparation of manuscripts for publication, podium and poster presentations
3) Interaction and mentoring of honours level students
4) Interaction and mentoring of honours level students

Summative
1) Written examination paper, 2 hours long
2) Published paper
3) Dissertation/project report

ARTICULATION OPTIONS

1) All core and ancillary modules with the exception of the dissertation allow entry by students form other professions e.g. Occupational Therapy, Speech Therapy, Optometry, Sports Science and Physiology.

2) The programme is compatible with similar level programmes internationally

MODERATION OPTIONS

1) Internal and external examiners as appointed by Senate
2) Peer review of publications.

CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS

External
1) Physiotherapy, Medical or Physiology Academics with at least a master's degree and specialisation based on the module and final specialisation.

2) Recognised expertise based on research work presented as posters, papers or published papers.

As per the SAQA Board decision/s at that time, this qualification was Reregistered in 2006; 2009; 2012; 2015.
