Clinical supervision gives the opportunity for formative integrative assessment of knowledge, skills (cognitive and interpersonal) and attitudes. The research project and many other projects are integrative and authentic. Summative evaluation in each module includes clinical assessment, which represents evaluation of integrated competency in an authentic work setting, for instance:
  • Organising an open day for the community (Nursing Management)
  • Implementing of a Mental Health Programme in a district (Adv. Mental Health)
  • A community assessment and diagnosis (Community Health)

The programme allows for three exit points, each with a recognised qualification and most with a professional registration. They could exit after 128 credits with a Certificate in Nursing, after 256 credits with a Diploma in Nursing, after 384 credits with a BN or with 512 credits with an Honours degree. It allows students to enter the programme with a wide variety of needs and credits. It draws on the rest of the University for a multidisciplinary approach through the electies students may choose.

    MODERATION OPTIONS
  • The School of Nursing and all its programmes are accredited by the South African Nursing Council every 4 years.
  • All papers or examinations are internally moderated by another examiner different from the lecture(s) in charge of the modules.
  • A combination of all papers at alternating two levels of the 4 levels in the programme are externally moderated every other year.
  • All forms of internal and external moderation are subject to University regulation and rules.

  • CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS
Until the HEQC establishes a registration system for assessors in the HET Band, the University of Natal assumes that on the basis of its rigorous selection criteria for the appointment of academic staff (who also have opportunities for staff development in assessment), staffs are competent to assess students on the modules they teach. This assessment is quality assured via a university system of internal moderation and external examination. External examiners are appointed for their teaching and diplomacy expertise and subject to the approval of faculty Boards. The University of Natal ruling is that 66 % of all assessments at exit level, i.e. leading to qualifications are externally examined.
