Registered-data under construction

The qualification content is currently being updated for the qualifications with the status “Registered-data under construction” or showing “DETAILS UNDER CONSTRUCTION” to ensure compliance with SAQA’S Policy and Criteria for the registration of qualifications and part-qualifications on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) (As amended, 2022). These qualifications are re-registered until 30 June 2027 and can legitimately be offered by the institutions to which they are registered.

 

In all of the tables in this document, both the pre-2009 NQF Level and the NQF Level is shown. In the text (purpose statements, qualification rules, etc), any references to NQF Levels are to the pre-2009 levels unless specifically stated otherwise.  

PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
To provide the theoretical knowledge, analytical skills and practical applications that will enable learners to practice as competent managers in commerce and industry. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING

  • Completed the certificate in Business Management of School of Business, University of Natal.

  • Demonstrate a thorough understanding of the function and practice of management, and will have basic competency in the fields of business accounting, finance and tax.
  • The learner will be capable of producing business reports and plans and will be able to communicate with specialists in management related disciplines, and will be able to conduct relevant research and development.
  • The modules in the qualification re-enforce the interconnectedness of the various management disciplines.
  • Learners will be sensitised to moral and social responsibility issues as these effect the management function.

    ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA 
  • Demonstrate critical thinking as applied to business situations, and can make connections across disciplines.
  • Learners will be able to access knowledge as researchers and a research report module provides evidence of the learner's capacity to synthesize research material, and also serves as an integrating module.

    Integrated assessment:

    The University of Natal is currently reforming its assessment strategies to include the assessment of applied competence for each qualification. In the meantime, a combination of continuous assessment and traditional written examinations serve to assess the integration of all/most of the learning outcomes for each module in a qualification.

    An integrated project is included in the class record work for Business Management 102, and Business Management 202, providing the integrated assessment projects for the Certificate and Diploma respectively. A credit bearing business report prepared in the 5th and 6th semesters by the learner provides the bass of integrated assessment for completion of the BBA degree.

    MODERATION OPTIONS 
    The ETQA system for HE is not yet fully developed. Until such time as it is, procedures described under Assessor Criteria will suffice. 

    CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS 
    Until the HEQC establishes a registration system for assessors in the HET Band, the University of Natal assumes that, on the basis of its rigorous selection criteria for the appointment of academic staff (who also have opportunities for staff development in assessment), staffs are competent to assess students on the modules they teach. This assessment is quality assured via a university system of internal moderation and external examination. External examiners are appointed for their teaching and disciplinary expertise and subject to the approval of Faculty Boards. The University of Natal ruling is that 66 % of all assessments at exit level, i.e. leading to a qualification, are externally examined. 

    REREGISTRATION HISTORY 
    As per the SAQA Board decision/s at that time, this qualification was Reregistered in 2006; 2009; 2012; 2015.
