| PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION |
| Purpose:
The purpose of the qualification is to train and deliver professional dieticians for practice in the extended health sector of South Africa. In view of health problems associated with a poor lifestyle, the HIV/AIDS pandemic, as well as under and over feeding, effective nutritional care for both healthy and sick people is of the utmost importance. The monetary load on health care services is out of control and one of the most basic principles to stabilise the problem, is for trained dieticians to provide preventative nutrition education and health care to all levels of the community. Furthermore, completion of this qualification prepares graduates for further study at Level 9. Rationale: In developing this professional qualification, requirements of the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA), and national and regional needs were taken into consideration. In composing the curriculum, consideration was given to career possibilities and manpower needs of our country. This qualification prepares the student for further post-graduate studies in Dietetics/Nutrition. This programme gives an opportunity for training which is a prerequisite for registration as a dietician at the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA). |
| LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING |
| Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL):
The North-West University accepts the principle underlying outcomes based, source-based- and life-long learning, in which considerations of articulation and mobility play a significant role, and subscribes to the view that Recognition of Prior Learning, whether acquired by formal education curricula at this or another institution, or informally (by experience) is an indispensable element in deciding on admission to and awarding credits in an explicitly selected teaching-learning programme of the North West University. Formal prior learning: Prior accredited learning at the Further Education and Training (FET) or Higher Education and Training (HET) level in relevant domains which RPL constitute credit-bearing units or modules should be recognized if evidence can be produced that shows that the student has achieved, at a satisfactory level, the outcomes and associated assessment criteria specified for modules of the Bachelor of Art (BA) in Behavioural Sciences and, if appropriate, allow the Recognition of Prior Learning for the achievement of the qualification in part or in full. Non-formal and informal prior experiential learning: An applicant who falls outside of the formal qualifications system but who can demonstrate (through the production of substantial and satisfactory evidence) experiential or work-based learning or a non-formal qualification (or a combination), may be considered for admission and/or for the Recognition of Prior Learning for the achievement of the qualification in part or in full. An applicant who, after such assessment, is deemed to have sufficient potential but is in need of further academic development, must be directed to other suitable learning programmes prior to admission or to parallel programmes after admission. Entry Requirements: The minimum entry requirements are: |

| ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA |
| The following Associated Assessment Criteria will be assessed in an integrated manner across the Exit Level Outcomes.
Integrated Assessment: Opportunities for both continuous formative and summative assessments are imbedded in the learning design of the Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Dietetics. Furthermore, students are assessed on the application of learned skills in order to assure that theory evolves into effective practice. A number of outcomes of related specialisations across the different year levels are assessed in an integrated manner by means of work-integrated learning from second to fourth year level. In addition, the student's evidence of the mastering of discipline specific knowledge and skills, writing and communication skills, computer literacy and ability to critically analyse and effectively evaluate a work-place related problem are assessed. |
| INTERNATIONAL COMPARABILITY |
| The South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) level descriptors for Higher Education Qualifications Framework (HEQF) Level 7 were used to design the qualification standard. These Level Descriptors are internationally benchmarked criteria based upon published work of the National Quality Assurance bodies in England, Scotland, Northern Ireland, New Zealand, and Australia. Thus, the generic Bachelor of Science (BSc) qualification compares favourably with other similar BSc qualifications, nationally and internationally with regard to outcomes and assessment criteria, programme design, degree of difficulty and notional learning time. |
