PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
This qualification is intended for process or chemical engineering technicians working in the process related industries. Learners achieving this qualification have the competence to apply existing process technology to chemical engineering related problems, process design and will illustrate competence thus contributing to the needs of the chemical industry. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
Descriptive entry level: The qualified person will be able to apply process engineering knowledge and skills in the chemical process industry. The applicant should be in possession of a Higher Education and Training First Degree or equivalent (NQF 6) in Chemical Engineering.

The qualification will be awarded to a learner who has provided evidence to the satisfaction of the assessors that the stated competence of the qualification, as detailed in the specified outcomes, has been achieved, either through education and training in a single provider's learning programme, or through experience that complies with the stated specified outcomes. 

EXIT LEVEL OUTCOMES 
The qualifying learner will have the ability to:

Identify, assess, formulate and solve process related technical and operational problems creatively and innovatively.
Design process equipment in order to modify existing sections of the plant or for new additions.
Plan and implement the production of required chemical products.
Plan and implement projects using project management tools and skills
Communicate effectively both orally and in writing with a variety of audiences using appropriate language structure, style and graphical support.
Have knowledge of the Safety, Health and Environmental (SHE) impacts of chemical processing activities in order to identify the impacts and measures used to control these impacts.
Use I.T in the application of engineering methods, skills and tools.

The qualifying learner will have the competence to:

Apply knowledge of mathematics, basic sciences and chemical engineering sciences when solving complex engineering problems.
Identify and solve process bottleneck problems to maximize production throughput
Monitor the process, in order to take corrective action timeously.

ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA 
The qualifying learner should provide evidence of his/her abilities to:
1. Apply relevant mathematic, scientific and engineering principles in solving specific engineering problems
  • Recognise a deviation in process parameters and propose a solution, which will restore desired performance.
  • Apply existing monitoring techniques (e.g. SPC, rating equipment) to evaluate the process.
  • Identify the crucial parameters for the operation of process equipment when solving process related problems
  • Manage the application of monitoring techniques

    2. Identify and formulate the design problem to satisfy user needs, applicable standards, codes of practice and legislation.
  • Design chemical engineering equipment and processes.
  • Plan and manage the design process, recognise and deal with the constraints.
  • Apply the correct principles, evaluate and use design tools when evaluating information and resources.
  • Perform design tasks including analysis, quantitative modelling and optimisation.
  • Evaluate alternatives and preferred solution.
  • Assess impacts and benefits of the design.
  • Communicate the design logic and proposal.
  • Write safe operating procedures.

    3. Establish clear priorities, schedule activities to ensure optimum use of time and resources, monitor performance against objectives
  • Plan and monitor handling activities by using relevant safety and hazardous information on materials/chemicals to safeguard the environment.
  • Submit an operating budget

    4. Work effectively as an individual, in a team and in multi-disciplinary environments.
  • Develop a project plan, defining all work required and providing a basis for monitoring and controlling work.
  • Identify the type of project (feasibility study, modification of existing facilities, complete design, procurement and construction) and perform appropriate project costing, estimation and cost control.
  • Evaluate possible alternatives through economic justification and assessment of their impact on social, legal, health, safety and environmental aspects.

    5. Write a report in the required format on a specific design problem.
  • Present, facilitate and exchange information on the above to technical and non-technical audiences? Identify ethical, responsible and professional behaviour within the working environment.

    6. Identify the main aspects of chemical processing activities that impact on the environment.
  • Advise applicable measures to control these impacts
  • Identify the SHE risks applicable to the use of a chemical for a certain activity given the Material Safety Data sheet.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of Environmental legislation (water act, air pollution act) to a given problem.
  • Apply methods of hazard identification and waste minimisation to a given environmental situation.
  • Design plant equipment and processes on appropriate engineering computer packages.
  • Demonstrate the ability to analyse and assess the software results correctly.

    Examiners are appointed by the Senate on recommendation of the Vice-Rector and Dean concerned.
    Moderators are appointed by the Senate on recommendation of the Vice-Rector and Dean concerned. Moderators for terminating instructional offerings must be competent persons who are not members of staff. Moderators for non-terminating instructional offerings may be full-time or part-time lecturers and/or other competent persons.
