PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
With the advent of the personal computer, new technologies have developed in the last decade, which were unheard of before. One of these emerging technologies was in the Mathematical Sciences, namely Mathematical Technology (MT). In May 1995 the University of Southern Mississippi (USA) started presenting a Master of Science Degree in Mathematical Technology on the Technikon Pretoria Campus.
A mathematical technologist (MT) is a person closely related to the Industrial Mathematician of the past. The dividing line is that a MT is a technologist from any one of the mathematically based technologies (such as engineering, chemistry, geotechnology et cetera) who has specialist training in some of the mathematical sciences applicable to their industry and who uses the sophisticated software and hardware available in the world of computing today in order to enhance the research techniques peculiar to their chosen profession. Much of the work of a MT is interdisciplinary which means that team work needs to be done and information needs to be shared via the Internet or by being published in professional journals or discussed at symposiums/congresses.
The qualification aims to take a mathematically gifted technologist with any four year bachelor's degree in technology (or equivalent) who is already employed as a technologist or has had experiential training and enhance their abilities as technologists. This will be achieved by combining their expertise in their chosen professions with the methods of research and development available through Mathematical Technology.
