The qualification content is currently being updated for the qualifications with the status “Registered-data under construction” or showing “DETAILS UNDER CONSTRUCTION” to ensure compliance with SAQA’S Policy and Criteria for the registration of qualifications and part-qualifications on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) (As amended, 2022). These qualifications are re-registered until 30 June 2027 and can legitimately be offered by the institutions to which they are registered.

 

In all of the tables in this document, both the pre-2009 NQF Level and the NQF Level is shown. In the text (purpose statements, qualification rules, etc), any references to NQF Levels are to the pre-2009 levels unless specifically stated otherwise.  

PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
Purpose:
The Bachelor of Music offers:
  • Abroad and basic undergraduate training in music in the academic and performing fields;
  • To ensure that South Africa has sufficient skilled individuals for the music needs of the country, including teachers, performing artists, producers musicologists and composers;
  • To provide students with opportunities for personal artistic growth and for making a rewarding artistic contribution to the South African and international community;
  • To provide students with the necessary academic and practical skills to proceed with more specialised and advanced study at Postgraduate level.

    Rationale:
    The qualification ensures that South Africa has sufficient skilled individuals for the music needs of the country, including teachers, performing artists, producers musicologists and composers. The qualification also provides learners with opportunities for personal artistic growth and for making a rewarding artistic contribution to the South African and international community. The learners will develop the necessary academic and practical skills to proceed with more specialised and study at Postgraduate level. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL):
    The institution has an Assessment and Recognition of Prior Learning (ARPL) policy in place and is available as well as the ARPL policy of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences.

    The policy defines the process that must be followed in the assessment of an application for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) at Postgraduate level and provides information pertaining to assessment tools that can be used in the assessment of RPL applications. The ARPL process is subjected to the Faculty's quality assurance process. Unsuccessful applicants may appeal according to the relevant appeal procedures.

    Entry Requirements:
    The minimum entry requirement for this qualification is:
  • Senior Certificate, NQF Level 4 with endorsement.
    Or
  • National Senior Certificate, NQF Level 4, granting access to Bachelor's studies.
    Or
  • National Certificate Vocational, NQF Level 4, granting access to Bachelor's studies.

    QUALIFICATION RULES 
    This qualification consists of the following compulsory and elective modules at National Qualifications Framework Level 8 totalling 480 Credits. 

    EXIT LEVEL OUTCOMES 
    1. Map new information, under guidance, into a coherent understanding of the discipline;
    2. Solve fundamental problems relating to issues in the arts and humanities, using appropriate methods and theories;
    3. Work with others as a member of a team and to take responsibility for participation in such a group;
    4. Organise ideas and communicate them effectively using visual, verbal and music performance skills in oral, written and media formats;
    5. Demonstrate familiarity with the nature, history, aesthetics, and theoretical foundations of music and music performance, and their functioning in varying South African social contexts;
    6. Show an understanding of the performance of music in accordance with applicable historic, stylistic, and theoretical prerequisites. 

    ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA 
    The following Associated Assessment Criteria assesses the Exit Level Outcomes in an integrated manner.
  • Exhibit a graduate-level of technical skills and aesthetic insight in performance on at least one instrument as judged by a panel of internal and external adjudicators.
  • Present, under supervision, written and adequately edited assignments as primary research projects logically and coherently, and exhibit an acceptable standard of academic Afrikaans or English.
  • Exhibit the necessary pedagogic and communication skills in a teaching situation involving children as well as adult learners.

    Integrated Assessment:
  • Public performances are presented by Performance and Orchestra learners in their final year to allow assessment of their ability to integrate the practical skills and academic knowledge acquired in all previous modules.
  • Specific self-study projects are used to assess the integration of acquired knowledge and skills in the case of students majoring in Musicology or Music Education. 

  • INTERNATIONAL COMPARABILITY 
    This qualification is comparable to international qualifications. 

    ARTICULATION OPTIONS 
    This qualification allows possibilities for both vertical and horizontal articulation.

    Horizontal Articulation:
  • Appropriate Professional Bachelor's Degree, NQF Level 8.

    Vertical Articulation:
  • Master of Music, NQF Level 8.
