PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
The purpose of the qualification is to provide learners with graduate-level knowledge, skills and applied competence in the field of Financial Accounting, Auditing, Taxation, Management Accounting and Computer Information Systems that provide opportunities for continued intellectual and professional growth, gainful economic activity and rewarding contributions to society.

A further purpose of the qualification is to provide South Africa with significant numbers of General Accountants for the public and private sector.

The third purpose of the qualification is to provide the undergraduate specialisation to commence with the B Com (Hons) Acc and CTA in terms of the requirements of the Public Accountants' and Auditors' Board and the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants.

The minimum entry requirement for this qualification is:
  • National Senior Certificate, NQF Level 4, granting access to Bachelor's studies.

    A B Com (Accounting Sciences) learner is able to compile financial statements in terms of GAAP and the Companies Act, evaluate financial statements, solve convergent and divergent Financial Accounting, Auditing, Management Accounting and Taxation problems in a manual and computer environment and perform audits in accordance with the General Accepted Auditing Standards and will be able to communicate results effectively. The learner will be able to perform the mentioned activities in an objective and independent manner.
