PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION
1. The (first) purpose of the qualification is to provide qualifiers with specialised knowledge, skills and applied competence in the field of wildlife management science.

2. The (second) purpose is to provide South Africa with a cadre of competent wildlife managers to enable the various types of renewable natural resources to be managed professionally in a sound scientific manner so as to benefit various levels of the South African community. These activities can be directed at state-owned, corporately-owned and private land. Such management forms the basis for various forms of natural resources use on a renewable basis. It includes eco-tourism and trophy hunting, both of which can make a substantial contribution to conservation-based rural community development. The net effect is to increase the quality of life of all South Africa's inhabitants, be they people or wildlife.

3. The qualification is multidisciplinary in nature and it teaches the graduates to interact in meaningful partnerships with other people and institutions to use effective wildlife management as a basis for capacity building in rural communities and as a baseline for eco-tourism activities.
