PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
The first purpose of the qualification is to provide qualifiers with an integrated doctorate-level knowledge, specific skills and applied competence in the field of architecture.

The second purpose of the qualification is to provide South Africa with significant numbers of graduates in the field of architecture so as to ensure that the numbers of local leadership is broadened and innovative and knowledge-based economic and scholarly activity is widened.

The third purpose of the qualification is to provide South Africa with a number of graduates, who through clear and continuous growing understanding and continued studies can make original contributions to their field.

A fourth purpose of the qualification is to provide South Africa with a group of graduates who will have a clear and growing understanding of architectural design, history, theory, construction and computer skills and transfer such knowledge as teachers.

    MODERATION OPTIONS 
    In order to ensure that assessment is fair, reliable and valid both internal and external assessors are used and the learner is assessed on the written dissertation and article, as well as through an oral on the thesis.

    External assessors are chosen on academic qualification and relevant experience in research and/or practice in order to ensure reliable and valid assessment. The research proposal has to be approved by the Head of the Department and the title of the dissertation by the Faculty. The oral assessment is attended by other members from the Faculty and is open to the public

    At least two external examiners are appointed.
