Registered-data under construction

The qualification content is currently being updated for the qualifications with the status “Registered-data under construction” or showing “DETAILS UNDER CONSTRUCTION” to ensure compliance with SAQA’S Policy and Criteria for the registration of qualifications and part-qualifications on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) (As amended, 2022). These qualifications are re-registered until 30 June 2027 and can legitimately be offered by the institutions to which they are registered.

 

In all of the tables in this document, both the pre-2009 NQF Level and the NQF Level is shown. In the text (purpose statements, qualification rules, etc), any references to NQF Levels are to the pre-2009 levels unless specifically stated otherwise.  

PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
Purpose:
Learners will be introduced to current research in Linguistics and Applied Linguistics with special reference to Southern African and continental African studies. Two core courses will provide the requisite background for learners who may not have encountered Linguistics before. There will also be a compulsory non-credit bearing module on research methodology. Thereafter learners choose two options which focus strongly on areas of development like multilingual education and materials design for multilingualism. The expected outcomes are that they will be able to apply these approaches to their research essays, with a compulsory focus on an African language. The qualification thus prepares learners to work in the field of African language development.

Rationale:
To produce learners who will be able to work on language development issues in African languages, in keeping with calls for the "intellectualisation" of African languages, in relation to the country's constitutional provisions on language.

Recognition of prior learning (RPL):
The faculty has an alternative RPL admission criterion: in exceptional cases, mature learners without a bachelor's qualification but with proven experience of working with African languages at an equivalent level may be admitted.

The minimum entry requirement for this qualification is:
  • Bachelor of Arts, Level 7.
    Or
  • Advanced Diploma in Language Practice, Level 7.

    B.A. (Honours) following the institution's usual template of four semester modules, plus a research essay. The four components are:
    Year 1: Honours.

  • Language Contact & Bilingualism (Core); NQF Level 7; 24 credits.

    Research Essay on a topic pertaining to the Applied Linguistics of an African language.

    EXIT LEVEL OUTCOMES 
    Detailed knowledge of the field of study (in this case: African language structures and linguistic/applied linguistic issues).
  • Application of this knowledge to understanding societal issues relating to the field of study (in this case: Applied linguistic issues concerning African languages).
  • Ability to contribute via empirical research to the field of study (in this case: The Applied Linguistics of African Languages).
  • A qualification of specialisation in a key area within the field of study by undertaking a research essay (in this case: Literacy, language technology etc.).

    ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA 
    Each module in the qualification in common with other qualifications in the faculty will be made up of one long, or two medium, or three short essays or projects. Details are given in the outlines supplied for each module. One desideratum special to this qualification is that one of the essays in most modules will comprise a reflective translation exercise of a key text into an African language. All essays and projects in the course will be based on work in African languages. (The emphasis at this level is on essays and projects, rather than tests or formal examinations).

    Integrated Assessment:
    The integrated assessment lies in the research essay in which learners demonstrate their ability to synthesise the main emphases in the qualification via choosing a specialist topic to research and write up. This integrated assessment carries 20% of the final qualification mark. 

    INTERNATIONAL COMPARABILITY 
    The qualification conforms to the template of institute's school of Humanities, which was designed to ensure international competiveness, with due regard to local conditions concerning access. The modules offered compare favourably with sociolinguistic and applied linguistic equivalents internationally. 

    ARTICULATION OPTIONS 
    This qualification allows for both horizontal and vertical articulation.

    Horizontal articulation:
  • Postgraduate Diploma in Applied Linguistics, Level 8.
  • Bachelor of Arts Honours in General Linguistics, Level 8.

    Vertical articulation:
  • Master of Arts in Applied Linguistics and African Languages, Level 9.
