PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
The first purpose of this qualification is to provide the qualifier with advanced post-graduate experience, knowledge, skills and applied competence in a specialised area in languages, the humanities or the social sciences in order to provide opportunities for continued personal growth, gainful economic activity and rewarding contributions to society.

The second purpose of this qualification is to provide qualifiers with the knowledge, skills and applied competences to equip them for continued higher research, e.g. doctoral studies. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
Assumptions of learning already in place before the programme leading to the qualification is commenced:

Bachelor of Arts (Hons) on NQF level 7 or
A NQF level 7 (480 credits) qualification or equivalent that is acceptable to Senate

The MA graduate is able to demonstrate:

ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA 
The qualifier is able to produce a research based dissertation that demonstrates on an advanced level the abilities to:

1. Select a particular research topic from a wide background

2. Plan and outline a research project that advanced knowledge in the field

3. Formulate meaningful aims and objectives that warrant serious analysis

4. Specify the research strategies to be followed assemble a subject bibliography and demonstrate mastery in using it critically and resourcefully

5. Manage theoretically sophisticated subject matter with skill

6. Synthesize a meaningful selection of subject information into a coherent argument

7. Work as a member of a team and independently

8. Develop discourse skills to engage effectively in debate in a professional manner

9. Complete a research project that is not necessarily new knowledge, but still advances knowledge in the field by bringing together insights, perspectives and interpretations that would otherwise have remained unexpressed.

10. Present research findings in the form of a well-structured expositional discourse consisting of useful and accessible knowledge.


INTEGRATED ASSESSMENT


The evidence is a research dissertation that demonstrates the qualifier's ability to carry out, complete and produce a research project at a high academic level.

Internal and external examination and moderation according to the rules of the university. 

CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS 
The minimum qualification for supervisors is a doctorate in the specific or a closely related field. For co-supervisors a specific or closely related Master's degree is acceptable. Senate appoints the supervisor and external and internal assessors according to the rules of the university.
