PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
To enable a candidate at this level to
  • Develop advanced academic and professional competences of expert teachers, trainers, development practitioners, curriculum specialists, system managers and educational researchers in terms of the roles and focus areas specified for learning programme design, implementation, assessment, quality assurance and specialised teaching in technology education.
  • Provide South Africa with a cadre of teachers and trainers in the field of technology education who will have a clear and growing understanding of the challenges facing the teaching and training professions.
  • Provide a qualification that will ensure practical competence gained in an authentic context and reflexively grounded in the theory and practice of technology education.
  • Ensure that the bearers of this qualification will demonstrate their responsibility and commitment in the teaching of the sciences and technology specifically.
    Develop the required research capacity of learners in terms of the SAQA critical outcomes and prepare them for advanced study at master's and doctoral levels.

    Critical cross-field outcomes:
    1. Identifying and solving problems in field of teaching and training with specific reference to science education in general, the pedagogy underpinning science and technology education specifically, in which responses display responsible decisions, using critical thinking skills.
    2. Reflecting the ability to work effectively with others as members of a team, group, organisation of community in the solving of problems, which relate to technology education and classroom teaching. Aspects of instructional design, learning programme development, classroom teaching and quality assurance applies to technology education specifically.
    3. Organising and managing oneself and one's actions related to scientific research, problem solving and investigating in the field of education, science education and technology education responsibly and effectively.
    4. As part of the development of the research capacity of the learner, a person should be able to collect, analyse, organise and critically evaluate information gathered during an investigation.
