PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
The purpose of the qualification is to provide the qualifier with advanced knowledge and practical skills in research methodology, in the field of earth science, in order to solve multi-faceted geological problems and in doing so contribute to the long term social and economic needs of South Africa. A measure of specialisation and a limited contribution to the global knowledge base are commonly inherent in an M Sc qualification.
