PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION
To introduce students to more sophisticated levels of chemistry and techniques used in the chemical industry.
This will include:
  • Methods in spectroscopy,
  • analytic techniques,
  • molecular modelling of compounds,
  • synthesis of organic and inorganic compounds,
  • a deeper understanding of materials.
  • To use information regarding chemical compounds and then to develop syntheses and analysis of compounds.
  • To prepare students for the M Sc level.
  • To give the students a wider background so that they can eventually move to the technical managerial level.

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING

    Learning outcomes:
    The learner will have:
  • a more sophisticated level of understanding of the principles of the four levels of chemistry, analytic, organic, inorganic and physical chemistry.
  • an understanding of the usage and application of the different methods in spectroscopy
  • an understanding of the usage and application of molecular modelling of compounds
  • an understanding or how to plan and then to execute synthesis of organic and inorganic compounds in the laboratory,
  • a deeper understanding of materials
  • an understanding of the unlocking of applications of information about chemical molecular compounds, their structures, activities/properties and syntheses.
The learner will be able to apply his/her problem solving skills in any of the different fields of chemistry.

    Critical cross-field outcomes:
The learner will be able to use the chemical sciences and related technologies effectively and critically, while showing responsibility towards the environment and the health of the communities.

PROVIDERS CURRENTLY ACCREDITED TO OFFER THIS QUALIFICATION:
This information shows the current accreditations (i.e. those not past their accreditation end dates), and is the most complete record available to SAQA as of today. Some Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionaries have a lag in their recording systems for provider accreditation, in turn leading to a lag in notifying SAQA of all the providers that they have accredited to offer qualifications and unit standards, as well as any extensions to accreditation end dates. The relevant Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionary should be notified if a record appears to be missing from here.
