PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION

The qualifying learner will have the ability to apply advanced horticultural production techniques, manage a range of horticultural establishments such as a retail or wholesale nursery or garden centre, and undertake ad hoc horticultural research.

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING

Prospective students must have a First Degree in Horticulture, equivalent qualification or an acceptable record of practical experience.

QUALIFICATION RULES

The qualification will be awarded to a learner who has provided evidence to the satisfaction of the assessors that the stated competence of the qualification, as detailed in the specified outcomes, has been achieved, either through education and training in a single provider's learning programme, or through experience that complies with the stated specified outcomes.

EXIT LEVEL OUTCOMES

The learner will be able to demonstrate the following capabilities:

Apply advanced and specialised plant production techniques.

Undertake applied research to assist in practical problem-solving within a horticultural practice.

Manage finance, human and other resources in a horticultural context.

Specified outcomes:

Perform selected advanced propagation and production techniques, utilise the appropriate equipment and assess the results.

Establish clearly the problem statement / hypothesis and select the most appropriate methodology to undertake the envisaged research into problem-solving in a horticultural practice. (C) (Credits = 20)
. Apply management skills in a horticultural enterprise. (CF) (Credits = 40)

Select and apply appropriate verbal and written communication techniques.

ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

1. Selected advanced propagation and production techniques have been correctly utilised
2. The problem statement and hypothesis are clearly formulated
3. The most appropriate methodology to undertake the envisaged research has been demonstrated correctly.
4. Relevant financial, planning, project management and marketing knowledge and skills have been demonstrated correctly.
5. Appropriate communication methods have been used efficiently in communicating with personnel and clients.

Integrated assessment:

A combination of formative assessment (projects, written tests, laboratory work, group discussions) and summative assessment methods (written examinations, practical project presentations). A graduate will be able to identify, assess, explain, interpret, discuss, compare, analyse and solve horticultural problems of a specialised nature. Assessment practices should integrate these elements, combining appropriate application of knowledge, skills and values to signify competence. Formative assessment will be continuous.
