| PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION |
| Purpose:
The purpose of the programme is to educate and train learners in the challenging field of Tourism Management. A sound academic background and thorough practical training will enable the tourism manager o apply her/his knowledge and skills in the workplace. The programme ensures the critical and development outcomes as well as development of skills, knowledge, values and attitudes of learners from all walks of life. Tourism Management aims to equip learners with the knowledge, skills, values and attitudes that will enable them to be confident and independent and to contribute responsibly in the economic reconstruction, development and growth of the country, and to adapt to and survive in an economically complex world. Tourism management also provides qualifying learners with a basic knowledge of and competence in the application of service techniques. The learner will be able to independently carry out required duties, make decisions and solve problems in the context of the workplace. It will also prepare the learner to be sensitive to issues of race, gender, age and sexual orientation, as well as to have for the human body. Rationale: The South African Tourism industry shows continued growth with clear demand for well-qualified staff within both the corporate and entrepreneurial sector. In designing this qualification priority was given to the needs of the South African Tourism industry, as well as the cost-effectiveness of education and training. By means of specialized education and personalized individual attention, Centurion Akademie offers market related education and training with high standards equal to international standards, which will thereby produce dynamic young leaders with entrepreneurial skills. This tourism programme is basically aimed at the implementation of knowledge and skills in specific fields on the NQF. Learners are equipped with the basic skills to provide a professional service to tourists based on the value for money principle. The market is placing increasingly more emphasis on education learners in the " know how" of the specific industry. The holistic approach of the programmes presented by Centurion Akademie is specifically designed to meet the needs of employers and South Africa as a whole by providing theoretical, practical and skills-oriented programmes with sufficient experimental learning. |
| LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING |
| It is assumed that learners accessing this programme will have passed grade 12 and demonstrated competence on the previous level against the standards on that level (i.e. NQF Level 4), and that learners are competed in the provider's language of instruction. (The language primarily used for instruction is Afrikaans. However due to the linguistic profile of the majority of our learner population multi-lingual academic staff may address concepts in a learner's mother tongue should the need for clarification arise).
Recognition of Prior Learning: Centurion Akademie recognizes that potential students may have previous training or experience for which they feel can be given credits. It recognizes that it may receive applications from students studying towards other qualifications who wish to change qualification or institutions or who are working in the industry and wish to their study for a new qualification or study further. The prior learning or experience for which they wish to receive credit however has to be assessed and credited in a formal and credible way. The process of Recognition of Prior Learning addresses this requirement of formal assessment. Tourism Management aim to attract student from outside who wish to equip themselves with advanced tourism management knowledge and skills above their current qualification. This includes current students of other institutions/recently-qualified people and managers in the field who wish to increase their ability. Depending on the particular outcomes in question, a candidate may be granted provisional approval and access to a year of study even if gaps are identified during the RPL process. A specially designed study plan will provide for making up these gaps during the year to which the candidate was granted access. Final approval of RPL will then be depended on these outcomes being met within the agreed timeframe. Access to the qualification: Access to the programme can be gained in a variety of ways. One of the Centurion Akademie's goals is to increase access to students. The admission criterion for this programme is Grade 12 or an equivalent qualification. In future it will be a Further Education and Training Certificates in preparation for higher education study or equivalent, such as an appropriate Bridging or Foundation Certificate. Entrepreneurship, Business Management or Mathematics on Grade 12 will be a strong recommendation. |

| ARTICULATION OPTIONS |
| Vertical Articulation with our current Diploma:
The Diploma provides a broad thorough introduction to tourism management principles and practical experience of skills and techniques. The purpose of the Advanced Diploma is to add knowledge and skills at a higher cognitive level and teach the students advanced skills and knowledge in the management tourism. Articulation between the current Diploma and this new Advanced Diploma is therefore possible for those students deciding to progress from the Diploma to the Advanced Diploma, with a corresponding increase in cognitive level. Articulation depends on certain prerequisites to be satisfied in the Diploma at 2nd year level. Horizontal articulation into outside programmes from this programme: This programme is designed to broadly follow the guideline of SAQA Unit Standards. Special emphasis has been placed on explicitly stating outcomes and assessment standards for each module. In this way direct comparison with outcomes of other qualifications is possible. Because all institutions offering equivalent qualification should also follow these standards, at least broadly, learner will theoretically be able to integrate both horizontally and vertically into other qualifications, providing they meet all necessary outcomes and other admission time until the NQF system is fully implemented, that some institutions are unwilling to accept learners from other institutions. Examples of this are all too common in South Africa institutions at present. How ever, such integration is greatly depended on individual agreements between institutions, and Centurion Akademie is continually negotiating such agreement as a matter of priority. |
