PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
Purpose:

The qualification provides registered medical doctors with training in the art and science of homeopathy to a level of proficiency, which enables them to register as homeopaths with the Allied Health Professions Council of South Africa.

To provide high quality homeopathic education through accredited teaching centers, offering qualifications of an internationally recognized standard and enabling students to sit the professional Postgraduate Diploma in Homeopathy examination.

Rationale:

It is essential within the global economy for South African to have alternative health and safety of the community as a priority. The interests of the public sector are at the heart of this qualification.

The qualification will equip learners with the relevant knowledge, skills and competencies to medicate and treat patients more effectively to a high standard as well as engage in community upliftment and alternative forms of treatment for illness.

This qualification promotes the principles of life long learning as it is available to learners who are already highly qualified and are passionate about healing and comforting the community with less invasive but just as effective means of medication and treatment. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
This qualification assumes that the learner is competent in the language of the instruction material, and the general theoretical and practical and professional and academic knowledge accomplished within the medical profession. The learner will have achieved a pass in the MBChB or MTech (HOM).

Recognition of Prior Learning:

The qualification can be attained in part or in full through recognition of prior learning that includes the outcomes having been achieved through formal, informal and non-formal learning and work experience. Recognition of Learning may allow for the accelerated access of learners of further learning.

At this time, Recognition of Prior Learning will be conducted under the auspices of the relevant ETQA.

Access to Qualification:

Only learners holding a medical qualification, which is recognized or can be registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa-MBChB will be considered for enrolment into the programme. MTech (HOM)-or qualified homeopath qualified through natal University or Wits.

    Learners will be required to show that they are competent against the following:

    1. Master the origins, fundamental principles and concepts of Homeopathy in relation to medical health care and the application thereof.
    2. Develop a process of need identification and consultation in the broader field of homeopathy.
    3. Investigate and analyze homeopathic methodologies to enhance therapeutic interaction.
    4. Master the appropriate level of research in homeopathy using an appropriate research methodology.
    5. Implement the theoretical component of homeopathic potentisation.
    6. Communicate effectively with patients and fellow medical professionals.
    7. Select, develop and Prescribe an appropriate treatment and appropriate treatments through homeopharmaceutics.
    8. Engage with a critical understanding of the mental pictures of the major polychrests of the homeopathic materia medica.
    9. Develop practitioner homeopathic therapeutic skills and practise homeopathy within the Primary Health care situation.
    10. Knowledge of concepts and techniques of repertorisation.
    11. Implement enhanced homeopathic therapeutic skills, enabling the practise of homeopathy in all appropriate clinical situations.
    12. Develop knowledge and understanding of abnormal psychology and the application of this knowledge to case taking and homeotheraputics.
    13. Review knowledge of clinical knowledge and highlight aspects of diagnosis and pathology which facilitate case taking and diagnosis of therapy.

    The critical outcomes outlined are developed though the programme design, content and methodology which emphasises the application of skill and knowledge in context, active learning, problem analysis and problem solving, critical reflection, independent learning and peer learning, formative and summative evaluation and the further development of academic learning, skills:

    ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA 
    In particular the assessor should ensure that the learner can demonstrate and make decisions about the following:

    1. Describe and discuss critically the theoretical and practical foundations of homeopathy.
    2. Diagnose patient illness or complaint and supply the relevant prognosis with advice to the patient.
    3. Explain selected treatment to the patient and answer any questions relating to the prescription or patient prognosis.
    4. Gathering data, the analysis it and the drawing of conclusions and making recommendations to professionals within the field as well as patients.
    5. Analyse the historical and philosophical background to the development of homeopathic thought and practice and case analysis.
    6. Describe and discuss homeopathic potentisation.
    7. Prepare, compound and mix homeopathic medicines.
    8. Application of the mental pictures of the major polychrests of the homeopathic materia medica knowledge in case taking and analysis and remedy selection.
    9. Analyse, discuss and suggest strategies to effectively diagnose and manage patient care and medication.
    10. Develop strategies and communicate effectively to patients to promote an effective working environment.
    11. Application of abnormal psychology and clinical knowledge to case taking and homeotheraputics.

    Integrated Assessment:

    In the assessment strategy as a whole, evidence must be demonstrated through a variety of options:
  • Formal written and where applicable oral examination/assessment will be made evident through both formative (textbooks, tasks and projects, assignments) and summative assessment (oral, written and clinical).

    The learner is required to put together a portfolio of evidence, which will act as proof of the learning that has taken place.

    INTERNATIONAL COMPARABILITY 
    Homeopathy is a widely recognized profession around the world, equivalent professional qualifications can be attained through institutes and professional boards in Europe, Canada, United States, Australia, New Zealand, Boraine, Switzerland, India, Portugal, Russia, Japan, France, British Institute of Homeopathy.

    The Faculty of Homeopathy offers equivalent qualifications around the world, this leads to the qualification MFHom (internationally) and the CDH offered by Boron in France. For doctors to gain a basic understanding of homeopathy enabling them to give informed guidance to patients and apply homeopathy in a targeted way in their patient care. 

    ARTICULATION OPTIONS 
    University of Cape Town recognizes the Faculty of Homeopathy for the qualification offered.
  • Complimentary medicine.
  • Other short courses related to the field of education.
  • International conferences and advanced workshops.

    MODERATION OPTIONS 
    The marking of assignments, projects and case studies and portfolios must be in accordance with the pre-determined assessment criteria. Marked assessments will be confirmed by sampling done by an external moderator be they local or international. 

    CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS 
    For an applicant to register as an assessor the applicant needs:
  • Minimum of 2 (two) years practical occupational experience/experts in their field.
  • Declared competent in all the outcomes of the National Assessor unit standards as stipulated by SAQA.
  • Detailed documentary proof of educational qualification, practical training undergone, and experience gained by the applicant must be provided.
