PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
Purpose:

The primary purpose of this qualification is to provide qualifying learners with applied competence in the analysis, interpretation, and application of Sport Science principles in the fitness and health, coaching, and teaching sectors of the Sport Industry. The Learner should be able to take strategic decisions in the context of Sport Science, and to assess any internal or external decision impacting on Sport Science. The learner should further be able to reflect on his/her scientific decisions and applications to assess the effect thereof in the holistic context of Sport Science as practice.

Rationale:

There is a need for qualified professionals in the field of Sport Science in South Africa. This qualification has been designed to address the expressed need and aims to develop professionals and enable them to apply their knowledge and skills in this field.

Applied competence as outcomes:

Learners accessing this qualification should demonstrate their ability to read, analyse and reflect on study material and relevant literature on a graduate level (NQF level 6). Learners should be able to communicate effectively using academic Afrikaans/English in written or oral form. Learners should be able to manage their own study programme and time effectively. Learners should have acquired applied competence in Sport Science and be able to take strategic decisions in a Sport Science context.

Recognition of prior learning:

Recognition of prior learning in case of learners not complying with the formal entry requirements will be conducted in accordance with the policy and guidelines of the University concerning the recognition of other forms of formal, informal and non-formal learning experience. Recognition takes place only where prior learning corresponds with the required NQF level, and in terms of applied competencies relevant to the content and outcomes of the qualification. Through recognition of prior learning, learners may gain access, advanced placement, or recognition of status, on condition that they continue their studies at this university.

Rules of access:

Access will be provided to the learner who is in possession of a B.Sc degree with majors in Human Movement Studies or any related qualification with a programme specific minimum level of competency on NQF level 6, generating a minimum of 360 credits.

    2. Plan and apply research in Sport Science correctly, including the precise gathering, analyzing, synthesizing and interpreting of information correctly at postgraduate level utilising relevant theoretical research principles and reflecting on research undertaken (research skills).
    3. Communicate effectively in writing and with the different role-players in the field of Sport Science by utilizing different modes of communication and reflecting on the applications made (communication skills).
    4. Develop an accountable theoretical and practical macro-vision of Sport Science locally, provincially/regionally, nationally and internationally (macrovision).
    5. Organize and co-ordinate resources and opportunities in Sport Science effectively and responsibly by applying relevant theoretical aspects (including entrepreneurship where relevant), reflecting on the applications made as well as accept the responsibility for his/her activities in the field of Sport Science (entrepreneurship; self-responsibility skills).
    6. Practice acceptable social sensitivity in their relationship with others and work efficiently in a sport science and multi-disciplinary team by implementing relevant theories reflecting on the implementation thereof (teamship).

    The learners will be assessed as competent when they can:

  • Problems in the field of sport science are identified and solved by applying the relevant theoretical principles on a postgraduate level (problem solving skills).

  • Research in the field of sport science (including gathering, analyzing, synthesizing and interpretation of information) by utilizing the relevant theoretical research principles (research skills) is planned and executed.

  • The ability to communicate orally and in writing with role players in the field of sport science (communication skills) is demonstrated.

  • A theoretical and practical macrovision of sport science locally, provincially/regionally, internationally and nationally (macrovision) is demonstrated.

    Integrated assessment appropriately incorporated to ensure that the purpose of the qualification is achieved:

    Formative assessment practices that will be implemented:

    Formative assessment is aimed at the developing of a life-long learning culture based on continuous self-study and comprises the following: practical and class assignments, essays, presentations, informal class tests, formal module tests in written or oral mode, research that leads to scientific assignments, self-assessment and group-assessment.

    Summative assessment practices that will be implemented:

    Integrated assessment, focusing on the achievement of the exit-level outcomes, will be done by means of a three hour written or oral examination at the end of each module on the study material covered in the module or other modules already passed.

    Pass requirements that will be implemented:

    Learners must achieve a minimum mark of 40% in the formative assessment to gain examination admission in each module.

    This admission mark is made up of all methods of formative assessment (tests and assignments) employed in a particular module. Summative assessment will assess learners by means of a written examination in each module, for which a minimum mark of 40% must be obtained. Learners pass a module by obtaining a final mark of at least 50%: 50 % comprises the mark obtained for the formative assessment, and 50% comprises the mark obtained in the examination. Learners with a final exam mark of at least 45%, may be granted a supplementary examination in the relevant module. 

  • INTERNATIONAL COMPARABILITY 
    Learners who obtain this qualification are expected to contribute to the effectiveness, productivity and ethical reputation of practitioners within the field of Sport Science and provide an impetus for global competitiveness. 

    ARTICULATION OPTIONS 
    Access to qualifications on a lower level:

    Learners who wish to gain access to certificates, diplomas or degrees on NQF level 5 or 6 may be allowed, subject to approval by the Dean and panel of participating departments.

    Access to qualifications on the same level:

    Learners who are (or have been) registered for this or another related qualification (or even for similar or related modules at another higher education or accredited training institution) will be allowed, with the permission of the Dean of the Faculty, to enter on the same level, provided that the rules of access have been complied with. Such learners will, therefore, retain credit for relevant modules passed at the previous institution.

    Access to qualifications on a higher level:

    The following possibilities for further study in higher education programmes having obtained this qualification exist: a Masters degree in Sport Science (NQF level 8) and related learning areas at any higher education institution which offers a Sport Science programme; a Post-graduate diploma in Sport Science (NQF level 8) and related learning areas at any higher education institution. 

    MODERATION OPTIONS 
    External examiners will be appointed by the Faculty upon recommendation by the Department of Sport and Movement studies at this institution. At least one external examiner per module will be appointed. External examiners will be selected from different higher education institutions in South Africa or abroad according to their experience. 

    CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS 
    Formal qualified assessors for evaluating learners in terms of foundational, practical and reflexive outcomes per module at the NQF level 7 will be appointed. The lecture of the module will be appointed as an assessor. Internal and external assessors (moderators and examiners) will be nominated by the Faculty, in consultation with the Department of Sport and Movement Studies and be registered with the appropriate ETQA, requiring them to comply with other criteria imposed by the relevant SGB.

    External examiners to the University with specialist academic knowledge in the relevant modules serve as external moderators for appropriate modules. At least one external and one internal examiner per module will be appointed. The lecturer of the module will serve as a internal examiner. Assessors with experience of assessment in the related field of study should be SAQA accredited.
