PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION

Purpose:

The primary purpose of this qualification is to provide qualifying learners with applied competence in the analysis, interpretation, and application of Biokinetic principles in the fitness and health industry. The learner should be able to take strategic decisions in the context of Biokinetics, and to assess any internal or external decision impacting on applications to assess the effect thereof in the holistic context of Biokinetics as practice.

Rationale:

There is a need for qualified professionals in the field of Biokinetics in South Africa. This qualification has been designed to address the expressed need and aims to develop professionals and enable them to apply their knowledge and skills in this field.

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING

Assumptions of learning already in place before the programme leading to this qualification is commenced:

Applied competence as outcomes:

Learners accessing this qualification should demonstrate their ability to read, analyse and reflect on study material and relevant literature on a graduate level (NQF level 6). Learners should be able to communicate effectively using academic Afrikaans/English in written or oral form. Learners should be able to manage their own study programme and time effectively. Learners must have acquired applied competence in Biokinetics and be able to take strategic decisions a Biokinetic context.

Recognition of Prior Learning:

Recognition of prior learning in case of learners not complying with the formal entry requirements will be conducted in accordance with the policy and guidelines of the University concerning the recognition of other forms of formal, informal and non-formal learning experience. Recognition takes place only where prior learning corresponds with the required NQF level, and in terms of applied competencies relevant to the content and outcomes of the qualification. Through recognition of prior learning, learners may gain access, advanced placement, or recognition of status, on condition that they continue their studies at this university.

Access to the Qualification:

Access will be provided to a learner who is in possession of a B.Sc degree or any related qualification with a programme specific minimum level of competency on NQF level 6 with majors (Human Movement Studies) as prescribed by the HPCSA (Health Profession of South Africa), generating a minimum of 360 credits.

Additional selection criteria:

The learner shall undergo a selection process as prescribed by the HPCSA to assist his/her competency/ability to undergo the training and suitability for the profession.

EXIT LEVEL OUTCOMES

The learners should be able to:

1. Demonstrate their ability to apply the theoretical principles of problem identification and solving in the field of biokinetics at postgraduate level, and reflect on the decisions made (problem-solving skills).

2. Plan and apply research in biokinetics, including the gathering, analysis, synthesis and interpretation of information on biokinetic issues correctly at post graduate level by utilizing the relevant theoretical research principles and reflecting on the research undertaken (research skills).

3. Communicate effectively in writing and orally with the different role-players in the field of biokinetics, utilizing different modes of communication and reflecting on the application made (communication skills).

4. Develop an accountable theoretical and practical macro-vision of biokinetics locally, provincially/regionally, nationally and internationally (macro-vision).

5. Organize and coordinate resources and opportunities in the field of biokinetics effectively and responsibly by applying the relevant theoretical aspects and reflecting on the application (including entrepreneurship, where relevant), and accept responsibility for their own activities in the field of biokinetics (entrepreneurship and self-responsibility skills).

6. Practise acceptable social sensitivity in relationships with others and work effectively in a biokinetic and multi-disciplinary team by implementing the relevant theory and reflecting on the implementation thereof (teamship).

7. Utilize appropriate biokinetic technology (measurement, rehabilitation and exercise equipment) effectively in the biokinetic environment (technological and environmental literacy).

8. Explore different effective learning strategies to acquire the various capabilities of a biokineticist (explore learning strategies).

9. Promote responsible citizenship through their approach to the holistic application of biokinetic capabilities and professional values in fitness and health (promote citizenship).

10. Practise acceptable social, cultural and aesthetic sensitivity towards people of different sports communities and the role-players in the biokinetic industry effectively by applying the appropriate principles and reflecting on the application made (cultural and aesthetic sensitivity).

11. Acquire acceptable employment-seeking skills that will give them the edge to enter the different sectors of the biokinetic industry as specialists (employment seeking skills).

The learners will be assessed as competent when they can:

1. Identify and solve problems in the field of biokinetics by applying the relevant theoretical principles (problem-solving skills).
2. Plan and execute research in the field of biokinetics (including gathering, analyzing, synthesizing and interpreting information on biokinetic issues) by utilizing the relevant theoretical research principles (research skills).
3. Demonstrate the ability to communicate orally and in writing with the role-players in the field of biokinetics (communication skills).
4. Demonstrate a theoretical and practical macro-vision of biokinetics locally, provincially/regionally, nationally and internationally (macro-vision).

Formative assessment practices that will be implemented:

Formative assessment is aimed at the development of a life-long learning culture based on continuous self-study and comprises the following: practical and class assignments, essays, presentations, informal class tests: formal module tests in written or oral mode, research that leads to scientific assignments: self-assessment and group-assessment.

Summative assessment practices that will be implemented:

Integrated assessment, focusing on the achievement of the exit-level outcomes, will be done by means of a three hour written or oral examination at the end of each module on the study material covered in the module or other modules already passed.

INTERNATIONAL COMPARABILITY

Learners who obtain this qualification are expected to contribute to the effectiveness, productivity and ethical reputation of practitioners within the field of Biokinetics and provide an impetus for global competitiveness.

ARTICULATION OPTIONS

Access to qualifications on a lower level:

Learners who wish to gain access to certificates, diplomas or degrees on NQF level 5 or 6 may be allowed, subject to approval by the institution.

Access to qualifications on the same level:

Learners who are (or have been) registered for this or other related qualification (or even for some related modules at another higher education or accredited training institution) will be allowed, with the permission of the institution to enter on the same level, provided that the rules of access have been complied with. Such learners will, therefore, retain credit for relevant modules that have been passed at the previous institution.

Access to qualifications on a higher level:

Having obtained this qualification, the following possibilities for further study in higher education programmes exist: a Masters degree in Biokinetics on NQF level 8 and related learning areas at any higher education institution which offers a Biokinetics programme or a Masters degree in Human Movement Studies on NQF level 8.

MODERATION OPTIONS

External examiners will be appointed by the institution upon recommendation by the Department of Sport and Movement Studies at this institution. At least one external examiner per module will be appointed. External examiners will be selected from different higher education institutions in South Africa, or abroad, or locally according to their experience.

CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS

Formal qualified assessors for evaluating learners in terms of foundational, practical and reflexive outcomes per module at the NQF level 7 will be appointed. The lecturer of the module will be accepted as an assessor. All internal and external assessors (moderators and examiners) will be nominated by the institution in consultation with the Department of Sport and Movement Studies for this purpose and registered with the appropriate ETQA, requiring them to comply with the other criteria imposed by the relevant SGB. Examiners external to the University and with specialist academic knowledge in the relevant modules serve as external moderators for modules in the qualification. At least one external and one internal examiner per module will be appointed. The lecturer of the module will serve as an internal examiner. Assessors should be SAQA accredited, with experience of assessment in the related field of study.

REREGISTRATION HISTORY

As per the SAQA Board decision/s at that time, this qualification was Reregistered in 2012; 2015.
