PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
The purpose of this qualification is to enable learners who have a first degree in Consumer Sciences to specialise is a particular subject area of the Consumer Sciences programme, which may be either in Foods, Interior design or Fashion merchandising. This specialisation will equip the learners with degree level experiences and applicable skills in the directions of industry, retail and the consumer Community in South Africa in any of the specialisation areas.

The second main aim of this qualification is to provide South Africa with graduated learners who have a broad theoretical attainments and practical skills in specific consumer sciences disciplines, such as consumer behaviour and consumer research methods with specialisation in one of the acknowledged disciplines. Subsequently a contribution will be made to the broadening of the leadership potential and innovative business ethics that will enhance the economic potential in South Africa.

This programme will also enable the learner to develop on a personal intellectual level through which value will be added to economic development whereby consumers and communities in South Africa will benefit through better service and product needs that will be addressed. Through the knowledge, skills and practical experience the programme offers the Consumer Scientist, the quality of life of all South Africans can be enriched through the application of these qualities in the development of products, services and broad consumer education.

The B Consumer Sciences degree or B.Sc. Consumer Sciences degree or the status of a B-degree as stipulated by the senate of the University.

The qualifying learner will:

1. Understand and be able to integrate specialised knowledge as well as experience of specialised techniques with which to address problems in industry, retail and the consumer in general. This includes knowledge of procedures and techniques, theory and models and research methods in consumer behaviour.

2. Apply the skills and appropriate scientific methods through which research in Consumer Behavioural patterns could be executed, results interpreted within a solid theoretical foundation and evaluated in terms of the application and usefulness of the findings for industry or retail.

3. Understand and demonstrate an appreciation for the consumer and consumer community in a diverse cultural South Africa. 

ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA 
The qualifying learner will:

1:
  • Analyse, integrate and evaluate knowledge in a scientific way through various media.
  • Undertake consumer research and address problems in a critical and creative way.
  • Identify, evaluate and propose creative and innovative ways of solving consumer-related problems in any of the three main Consumer Sciences disciplines of Food, Interior design and Fashion merchandising.
  • Use the discipline-related knowledge in any position in the economy to address the needs of the consumer in South Africa.

  • Apply specialised knowledge, skills and techniques of the Consumer Sciences discipline to examine a consumer related problem.
  • Apply appropriate information technology skills and research skills with which to propose viable and well founded methods to solve problems within the industry and retail markets.
  • Communicate in writing (through project reports) and verbally (by means of presentations) on a scientific or popular way to the general consumer in South Africa or more specialised and scientific consumer audiences through the use of appropriate technology and presentation techniques.

  • Understand and demonstrate the impact of Consumer Sciences activities in industry, retail and the South African consumer.
  • Understand the way in which the consumer behaves towards products and services affects the decisions the Consumer Scientist makes in industry and retail.

    Integrated assessment:

    Integrated assessment is performed on a continuous basis and comprises formative assessment, which incorporates:
  • Written class tests that asses the problem solving abilities of the student.
  • The integration of knowledge.
  • Excursions to industry and retail.
  • The application of solutions to problem centred situations.
  • Presentations of written research reports on particular consumer related problems.
  • Literature studies that include a verbal presentation of the findings and conclusions of the student.

    Summative assessment may be conducted by means of written exams designed to assess the problem solving skills of the student on NQF Level 7 and where the student must substantiate the explanations through critical and creative knowledge and the application of scientifically founded research.

    At the end of the study the graduate will be able to work effectively as an individual, in teams and in multidisciplinary contexts as a leader or to assist in other critical functions. 

  • ARTICULATION OPTIONS 
    With the successful completion of the B. Honours Consumer Sciences programme, the learner will have direct access to the Masters in Consumer Sciences.

    Credits will be given for modules from other faculties and institutions with the understanding that the outcomes and total value of credits will be achieved for this programme. 

    MODERATION OPTIONS 
    For each formal examination in the programme, one or more internal examiners and one or more internal moderators are appointed through the faculty board of the Faculty of Health Sciences.

    The moderating body for qualifications of the University is the Higher Education Quality Committee of the Council on Higher Education. 

    CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS 
    Academic staff members from the University are appointed as assessors with regard to their expertise in one ore more of the disciplines of Consumer Sciences, as well as their experience with assessments, which are trained by a special group of Academic support staff at the university. 

    NOTES 
    This qualification replaces qualification 14441, "Bachelor of Consumer Science Honours", Level 7, 120 credits. The provider of this qualification is: University of Potchefstroom.
