| PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION |
| 1. To provide qualifiers with:
o Advanced knowledge of the core sub-fields of Human Movement Science with specific emphasis on the application thereof in the area of Biokinetics; o The accompanying competencies and attitudes to practise Biokinetics, pursue further intellectual development, and contribute to society. 2. To provide South Africa with sufficient numbers of graduate Biokinetics with a clear and growing understanding of the place of Biokinetics on the wellness continuum for the people of South Africa. |
| LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING |
| 1. Assumptions of learning
In order to enter into this program a learner should be able to: 1.1 articulate clearly their ideas about Biokinetics (Exercise Science) in speech and writing through their mother tongue and a second or third language of which one is English; and 1.2 read and analyse graduate level literature in their mother tongue and English in the field of Biokinetics. 2. Prior Accredited Learning: The entrance requirements for this qualification is: 2.1 A Baccalaureus degree with at least 148 credits in Human Movement Science or any equivalent qualification with a programme specific minimum level of competency for the NQF level 6 modules. 2.2 A minimum standard of achievement in the Human Movement Science related modules as set by the UPE Department of Human Movement Science or an appropriate level of experience after the attainment of the relevant formal qualification will be required. Recognition of Prior Learning Learners will be required to demonstrate that they have achieved the assumptions listed in 1. Learners could be exempted from certain prescribed modules should they demonstrate that they have achieved the outcomes of the relevant modules. The outcomes may be assessed by a combination of integrated assessments, including a portfolio of evidence, demonstrations, simulations and tests of conceptual understanding. |

| EXIT LEVEL OUTCOMES |
| 1. Exit Level Outcomes
1.1 Specific exit level outcomes By the end of the programme the qualifying learners should be able to demonstrate the following practical, foundational and reflexive competencies: 1.1.1 Practical competencies in: 1.1.1.1 the assessment of wellness, prescription and implementation of programmes for people at various levels of exercise risk (problem solving); 1.1.1.2 knowledge of and practical experience in the establishment and running of a Biokinetic practice (entrepreneurship, self responsibility skills); 1.1.1.3 the ability to acquire the acceptable employment seeking skills for entry into the different sectors of the health and fitness industry utilising the theoretical principles and reflecting on the application thereof (employment seeking skills); 1.1.1.4 the ability to effectively communicate and liase with the different role players in the field of Health and Fitness (communication skills); 1.1.1.5 the utilisation of the appropriate technology in evaluating clients and patients for the purpose of exercise prescription for health maintenance and rehabilitation (technological and environmental literacy); and 1.1.1.6 the planning and conducting of research in the field of Biokinetics (research skills). 1.1.2 Foundational competencies in: 1.1.2.1 the application of the underlying theoretical principles involved in health promotion and rehabilitation (problem solving skills); 1.1.2.2 the conceptualisation of the client (patient) behaviour (problem solving, cultural sensitivity); and 1.1.2.3 the development of a theoretical and practical macro vision in the field of Biokinetics (internationally, nationally, provincially/regionally and locally) (development of macro vision). 1.1.3 Reflexive competencies in: 1.1.3.1 the application of the research principles and methods related to the field of Biokinetics (this includes the gathering, analysing, synthesising and interpretation of relevant information) (research skills); 1.1.3.2 the practice of acceptable social sensitivity in professional relationships with others and working effectively in a team by implementing the relevant theory and reflecting on the implementation thereof within a health and fitness context (teamship); 1.1.3.3 the exploration of effective learning strategies to acquire the various capabilities of a Biokinetics (Health) professional (explore learning strategies); and 1.1.3.4 the promotion of responsible citizenship through an holistic approach to and the ethically correct application of professional conduct in the field of Biokinetics (promoting citizenship). 2. Critical Cross-field outcomes By the end of the programme qualifying learners will be able to: 2.1 identify, assess, formulate and solve convergent and divergent problems in the field of Biokinetics; 2.2 work responsibly and effectively with individuals and teams in multi-disciplinary environments, such as research, scientific support services, entrepreneurial projects, and community education projects; 2.3 demonstrate leadership, and perform critical Biokinetics related functions within various communities, such as, health professionals, health and fitness leaders, and the sport medicine fraternity; 2.4 collect, analyse, organise and critically evaluate Biokinetics related information scientifically; 2.5 communicate both verbally (orally) and non-verbally (in writing) with (clients) patients using appropriate structure, style and graphical support, through assessment reports and individualised training programmes; 2.6 communicate research proposals and reports to health professionals and the general public, and educational presentations to relevant communities; 2.7 effectively and critically use science and technology through the demonstration of appropriate selection of resources and techniques, for performance assessment, programme prescription, educational presentations, etc. 2.8 be sensitive to the impact of Biokinetics as a discipline on personal health and on the environment, such as the use and effect of ergogenic aids to enhance performance; 2.9 demonstrate an understanding of the world as a set of related systems by recognising that Biokinetic related problem solving does not exist in isolation; 2.10 explore and use a variety of learning strategies to reflect critically on previous behaviours and create and implement future action plans; 2.11 participate as responsible citizens in the lives of local, national and global communities through health promotion; 2.12 act professionally, ethically and sensitively within a diverse community (culture, gender, abled / differently abled, etc.); 2.13 explore career opportunities for entry into the health and fitness industry; 2.14 identify and optimise entrepreneurial opportunities in the Health industry. |
| ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA |
| Integrated Assessment
The strategies that will be used to ensure that the specific and critical cross-field outcomes are achieved comprise: 1. continuous assessment by making use of assignments and tests for the theoretical part of the programme; 2. projects for the applied and practical sides of the programme; 3. compulsory internship which will be utilised to evaluate comprehension and critical practically related skills; and 4. independent research that leads to a written report in the form of a treatise and a formal oral presentation. The treatise will comprise all the elements of a formal research exercise including a review of the relevant literature, appropriate research design, methodology, statistical analyses presentation and discussion of results. |
| ARTICULATION OPTIONS |
| 1. Horizontal level
Learners who are (or have been) registered for this or another related qualification (or even for some of the same related modules at another higher education training institution) will be allowed, with the permission of the Head of the Human Movement Science Department, to enter on the same level, given the rules of access have been complied with.
