| PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION |
| To provide those wishing to work at a professional level in the domain of library and information science a first professional qualification appropriate to the initial stages of a professional career. |

| The normal expectation is that an applicant will have completed a first degree, in any subject; applicants with other qualifications in the domain, such as the Lower Diploma in Library and Information Science, will also be admitted if they can provide evidence of three or more years of experience or work in a library, information service or resource centre.

I. The diplomat will be able to undertake management tasks appropriate to the initial stages in a professional career, plan and control small-scale projects, coordinate small task teams and work with members of a user community in order to develop information services; II. The diplomat is equipped with proficiency in knowledge of the theory of library and information science sufficient to be able to organise a collection of information for efficient access, assess and respond to user needs, locate and search sources of information, and critically assess the results of such searching. b) General outcomes (contextually demonstrated general knowledge, skills and values of the programme) The diplomat is able to: (i). Trace significant developments in the theory of library and information science; (ii). Communicate verbally and orally with professional audiences and with users; (iii). Apply skills and knowledge of the structure of information domains to discipline based problems in locating information. (iv). Analyse and critique local policies with respect to the development of libraries and information services; (v). Appreciate the ethical issues associated with the supply of information; (vi). Appreciate the impacts of the development of information technology on the delivery of information. c) Specific Outcomes, including professional outcomes, contextually demonstrated) The diplomat will be: i) Familiar with contemporary philosophical and theoretical issues in library and information science; ii) Able to conduct searches for manual and computerised information systems using advanced searching techniques; iii) Able to conduct advanced literature searches; iv) Able to prepare reports and to communicate with other professionals and user groups; v) Able to develop a database and a classification scheme; vi) Able to use the standard bibliographic tools for subject description and organisation; vii) Able to develop strategies and plan for the development of library and information services; viii) Able to use the tools of information technology and to appreciate their significance for the supply and organisation of information. |

The outcomes are assessed as follows: Integrated assessment: The integration of skills learnt in the Postgraduate Diploma in Library and Information Science is assessed by means of a research paper not exceeding 5 000 words. Competence in the following areas, all of which are assessed in the examination of the paper. The research paper is subject to external examination. |
