| PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION |
| The specialist in Oral Medicine and Periodontology must be competent in the diagnosis, treatment, management and prevention of periodontal diseases, and of primary and secondary lesions and diseases, including disorders and anomalies, involving the oral and para-oral structures.
The specialist clinician in the field of oral medicine and periodontology will promote health and provide health care to the benefit of all communities. Furthermore, he will have developed individualised learning skills to keep abreast of new information in the field of oral medicine and periodontology and will possess a strong commitment to lifelong learning in his speciality. The specialist will have gained skills to initiate research in the field of his speciality. The specialist will be able to register with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a specialist clinician in Oral Medicine and Periodontics. |
