PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
Purpose:

The primary purpose of this qualification is to:
  • Consolidate and deepen the learner's expertise in Tourism Development by developing a coherent and critical understanding of the principles and theories of Tourism Development.
  • Provide qualifying learners with comprehensive and systematic theoretical knowledge and practical skills to apply the knowledge gained from Historical Studies, Geography and Environmental Studies, Anthropology, Tourism Development and Sport Management to strategically identify new tourism attractions and develop tourism and heritage attractions in the tourism industry.
  • Prepare learners for the full range of the research based postgraduate study by developing their research capacity in the methodology and techniques of Tourism Development.
  • Provide qualifying learners with the opportunity and a capacity for continued learning in the field of Tourism Development at NQF level 9 towards a master's programme in Humanities and Social Sciences.

    Rationale:

    The Rand Afrikaans University is the only tertiary institution that offers a degree targeting the development of the tourism industry through fundamental postgraduate research based on the knowledge of the four fundamental disciplines, i.e. Historical Studies, Geography, Anthropology and Management. The honours degree is offered on the grounds of the specific request of the Director Marketing (Research) of the gauteng tourism authority for assistance to GTA with fundamental tourism research for the development of new tourism attractions and sustainable tourism ventures in order to develop the tourism industry in South Africa beyond the existing retailing attractions. The new University of Johannesburg combines the tourism training of the RAU and the Technicon Witwatersrand. The existing TWR School of Hospitality and Tourism will be the centre of Tourism training of the University of Johannesburg.

    This degree will facilitate the development of the fundamental research capacity for the tourism industry. This degree will promote research capacity development in the school of Tourism at the new University of Johannesburg.

    Appropriate prior learning of the learner in the Tourism Industry and related experience in Tourism Development and/or management will be assessed in order to determine access, advanced placement in the qualification or recognition of status on condition that the learner continues his/her studies at this institution.

  • Identify, analyse and deal with complex problems and issues using evidence-based solutions and theory-driven arguments in order to identify historical, environmental, anthropological and sport related resources relevant to the tourism industry and to establish links between history, sport, heritage, culture, community interests, the environment and tourism.

  • Develop the capacity to work in a team of specialists in Historical Studies, Geography, Anthropology, Sport, Archaeology and Palaeontology, Business Management and practitioners in the Travel industry and communicate with communities in which heritage and tourism sites are identified.

    3. Self-responsibility skills:
  • Demonstrate a capacity to self-evaluate exercising personalresponsibility and initiative in order to recognise the importance of heritage and environmental sites.
  • Foresee the necessity to preserve them for tourism but all for future generations.

  • Acquire advanced skills in the gathering of relevant information, logical ordering of the information, the analysis of the information as well as critical evaluation of the results in the study of history and heritage, the environment, sporting events and tourism.

  • ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA 
    Competence is displayed when a learner is able to:

    Display a knowledge, skill and ability, via practical assignments, towards compiling a business plan, highlighting the way in which a community heritage, sports event or environmental attraction could be marketed as a tourism attraction.
  • Gather data through field work.
  • Classify data.
  • Design questionnaires, evaluate results and draft a report.
  • Complete a resource audit.

    Prove in practical work that he/she is capable of:
  • Organising a team for practical exercises, demonstrating leadership abilities during excursions, field work and practical exercises.
  • Cooperation with the specialists.
  • Consult with specialists and students from other disciplines towards tourism development.

    3.
    Motivate in an advanced research report concerning the reasons why important heritage and environmental sites should be preserved:
  • Motivate in a group session why certain sites are worth preserving and others not.

    Write a sound research report for the resolution of tourism development issues in which he/she demonstrate his/her abilities to:

  • Extract relevant information.
  • Synthesise facts and interpretations.
  • Present the results in manuscript form by using appropriate software programmes, example Word Perfect or MS Word.

  • In the course of researching and solving issues in Tourism Development, conduct tailor-made exercises, answer short questions, multiple choice questions and write essays.

  • Include in all Tourism Development projects a displayed empathy for the diversity of the cultural richness in South Africa and the Southern African region.

    Integrated assessment:

    Because assessment practices must be open, transparent, fair, valid, reliable and ensure that no learner is disadvantaged in any way whatsoever, an integrated assessment approach is incorporated into the programme. Both formative and summative assessment processes are accounted for to monitor progress during the programme and to determine competence at the end of the programme.
  • Formative (continuous) assessment practices that will be implemented

    Learners are continuously assessed by way of advanced research projects, oral and multi media presentations, participation in and preparations for class discussion, formal module tests, practical projects and field visits on group and individual basis. The research component comprises 50% of formative assessment.
  • Summative assessment practices

    Learners write one examination as a final opportunity on each of the modules taken during the semester towards the end of each semester. Formal learning content assessed in the examination includes the research projects. Each module will have a final examination that will make up 50% of the total assessment mark, since the formative assessment will make up the remaining 50%. All final assessments will be externally moderated. 

  • INTERNATIONAL COMPARABILITY 
    The qualification has been compared to other qualifications in Tourism internationally, to ensure that graduates meet globally recognized standards. As such, learners who obtain the qualification are expected to contribute to the effectiveness, productivity and ethical reputation of practitioners within the tourism sector and provide an impetus for improved global competitiveness. Special reference can be made to the programmes in Tourism offered in the Arts Faculty at the University of Central Lancashire, under the auspices of Professor john Walton. Baranowski Professor of History, Butchtel College of Arts and Sciences, University of Akron, OHIO, USA.     ARTICULATION OPTIONS 
    Access to qualifications on the same level (horizontal):

    Learners who are (or have been) registered for this or another related qualification on NQF level 7 at another higher educational institution, will be allowed to enter mid-stream. Such learners will retain credit for modules that they passed, after recognition by the previous institution and the Dean of the Faculty. Learners, who want to switch to another qualification or other modules at this institution, may do so subject to certain time limits. They will retain full credit for modules that they passed. If learners want to continue their studies at another higher educational institution, they may switch towards the end of the first or the second semester. This will also be in accordance with the regulations of other institutions.

    Access to qualifications on a higher level (vertical):

    Learners who have successfully completed the BA Hons (Tourism Development) would be eligible for further studies (Masters' degrees) on NQF level 8 at RAU and any other institutions. 

    MODERATION OPTIONS 
    Recommendation of a moderating body or bodies (internal and external):

    Internal University requirements govern how and by whom moderation and assessment is performed to ensure that assessors and moderators have the competence required to assess and moderate a qualification of this nature.

    Moderation seeks to ensure that graduates will be able to comply with professional and statutory requirements. The following measures will be used to ensure the quality of assessment procedures: use of a variety of assessment modalities; continuous evaluation results; memoranda; internal and external examiners and peer moderation. Both internal and external examiners will be appointed by the Dean upon recommendation by the Department at this institution. At least one internal and external examiner will be appointed. External examiners with at least a degree on NQF 8 will be selected from within the different higher education institutions or other educational institutions in South Africa or abroad. 

    CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS 
    Assessors must have a minimum qualification on NQF level 8 in either of the Humanities, Social Sciences, Environmental Management, Tourism Marketing and Sport Tourism for the academic assessment of the study.

    Furthermore assessors from the Tourism Industry will be required to have long standing experience in Tourism development, research, management and marketing in order to supplement the academic assessment.

    Academic and practical assessment will be conducted with equal weight.
