PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
This whole qualification enables learners to further develop in-depth knowledge and understanding of the principles, theories and approaches to, the institutionalised structures and processes, as well as the practice related mechanisms of Labour Relations.

This qualification follows on the NQF 7 - level qualification of M Admin (Labour Relations Management), and is a further advanced step in equipping students at this level with intellectual and practical skills to function as Labour Relations specialists and/or consultants at the strategic executive level, in applicable sectors and fields of the South African and international labour markets.

This qualification further develops the intellectual capacity of students to develop policy and strategic programmes for effective Labour Relations Management in organisations and to act as specialists in all the various practical fields of Labour Relations Management.

This qualification focuses strongly on the further development and advancement of research skills and competencies in the field of Labour Relations Management. The doctoral thesis therefore forms the main obligation in obtaining the qualification.

The outcomes of this qualification will contribute to the student's personal and professional development and a propensity for life long learning.

The successful learner will obtain a further and more advanced qualification, after registration in the highest professional category at the ETQA for Labour Relations Practice, having successfully completed the M Admin. (Labour Relations Management) or other comparable qualification
At the D Admin qualification level the student should already have:
  • The competencies to act as a specialist practitioner or researcher in the application field of Labour Relations Management.
  • The ability to do specialist research related to problem solving and strategic imperatives in Labour Relations Management.

    D Admin (Labour Relations Management)

    Learning outcomes:
    1. Undertaking independent, applicable research in the field of Labour Relations Management, which should contribute meaningfully towards the expansion of scientific knowledge and problem-solving entities of this field. This implies:
  • Identifying a research problem and selecting the applicable methodology to address the problem.
  • The critical analysis of applicable literature and integrating this knowledge with data from an empirical study.
  • Applying the research results in the Labour Relations Management field

    Critical cross-field outcomes:
  • The research competencies of learners are the focus of attention, and are assessed by the supervisor/study leader and a minimum of two external examiners. The doctoral thesis will be evaluated in terms of the student's ability to:
  • Identify a suitable research problem in terms of the stated D Admin level requirements in this regard (research should contribute significantly towards knowledge expansion and problem solving in Labour Relations Management)
  • Effectively plan a research project.
  • Select and implement appropriate research methods.
  • Critically review the literature and to document it according to accepted scientific practises.
  • Analyse the data, utilising relevant qualitative or quantitative methods.
  • Integrate the theoretical knowledge with empirical data.
  • Formulate relevant conclusions.
  • Evaluate research findings.
  • Make applicable recommendations based on research findings.
  • Assessment includes both assessment by the supervisor/study leader and external examiners, resulting in a report of what the learner has achieved, in terms of the aspects mentioned in the previous point.
  • Under certain circumstances an oral examination can be regarded as necessary by the panel of assessors.
  • External examiners /moderators are contracted for all final assessments. An independent report is submitted to the Dean of the Faculty on the standards, effectiveness and relevancy of the assessment procedure.
