PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
The first purpose of this programme and qualification is to provide qualifying learners with post-graduate level:
  • applied competencies and practical skills in the organisation, analysis, interpretation and application of advanced Information Management principles;
  • the ability to reflect on managerial decisions and be able to assess the effect thereof in the holistic context of Information Management as a practice;
  • opportunities for life long learning and personal intellectual growth and equip learners with skills for a successful career in the Information Management profession.

    The second purpose of this programme and qualification is to provide South Africa with highly qualified graduates who will become leading professionals in the ever-growing Information Management profession in the public and private sectors. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Applied competence as outcomes

    Learners accessing this qualification should demonstrate their ability to read, analyse and reflect on study material and relevant literature on a graduate level (NQF 6). Learners should be able to communicate effectively using academic Afrikaans/English in written and oral form. Learners must be able to manage their own study programme and time effectively. Learners must have acquired applied competence in management context and be able to take managerial decisions in the context of the Information Management profession.

    Rules of access

    A potential learner should be in possession of a B Com degree or equivalent on NQF level 6 with Business Management (or similar) as core modules on NQF level 6.

    Additional selection criteria

    Applications for entry will be assessed according to the set rules of access stated in the programme by an admittance committee of the Department of Business Management (RAU), upon which the Dean of the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences will approve the assessment. If an applicant does not meet the requirements stated the admittance committee will suggest a route for further studies.

    Recognition of prior learning

    Recognition of prior learning in case of learners not complying with the formal entry requirements will be conducted in accordance with the policy and guidelines of the University concerning the recognition of other forms of formal, informal and non-formal learning experience. Recognition takes place only where prior learning corresponds with the required NQF level, and in terms of applied competencies relevant to the content and outcomes of the qualification. Through recognition of prior learning learners may gain access, or advanced placement, or recognition of status, on condition that they continue their studies at this University.

    Integrated Assessment

    Because assessment practices must be open, transparent, fair, valid, reliable and ensure that no learner is disadvantaged in any way whatsoever, an integrated assessment approach is incorporated into the qualification. Both formative and summative assessment processes are accounted for to monitor progress during the programme and to determine competence at the end of the programme.

    Formative assessment practices that will be implemented

    Learners are continuously assessed via practical group and class assignments, essays, presentations, informal class tests, and formal modular tests in a written mode. In addition, learners assess themselves and others and reflect on the dynamics of these processes.

    Summative assessment practices that will be implemented

    Integrated assessment, focusing on the achievement of the exit-level outcomes, will be done by means of a written examination (of at least 3 hours) at the end of every module (per module).

    Pass requirements that will be implemented

    A learner passes a module if he/she obtains a final mark of 50% or more in the module. The final mark is constituted of the formative assessments (50%) and the summative assessment (50%). A learner qualifies for the B. Com Honours degree on NQF level 7 when he/she passed all the required modules individually. The final mark for the qualification is calculated by averaging the marks obtained in the various modules.

    ARTICULATION OPTIONS 
    Access to qualifications on a lower level

    Learners who have completed this qualification can apply to be admitted to any related programmes on certificate, diploma or degree level (NQF level 5 or 6).

    Access to qualifications on the same level
    Learners who are (have been) registered for a similar/related qualification at this or another institution for higher education registered with the NQF, can apply to be admitted in any qualification at the same level. Such learners will retain credit for relevant modules that have been passed, subjected to approval by the Dean of Economic and Management Sciences.

    Access to qualifications on a higher level

    Having obtained this qualification, the following possibilities for further study in higher education programmes exist:
  • M.Com (Information Management) or M Phil (Information Management) on NQF level 8;
  • D Com (Information Management) or PhD (Information Management) on NQF Level 8. 

  • MODERATION OPTIONS 
    Both internal and external examiners will be appointed by the Dean of the Faculty of Economic and Management Science upon recommendation by the Head of the Department of Business Management at this institution. External examiners have to approve all examination papers, and must mark a minimum number of answering papers as specified by the Dean of the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences (RAU). At least one internal and external examiner per module will be appointed. External examiners with at least a master's degree in the job related or learning area experience will be selected from different higher education institutions and organisations in South Africa or abroad. 

    CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS 
    Qualified assessors in terms of foundational, practical and reflexive outcomes, will be appointed by the Dean of the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences of this institution, upon recommendation of the Department of Business Management for assessing the learner undertaking this qualification, and must comply to one or more of the following criteria:
  • Assessors for the learner undertaking this qualification should be qualified in the area of Information Management and should be in possession of at least a relevant masters degree on NQF level 8.
  • Assessors for the learner undertaking this qualification should have the necessary learning and job experience in the area of Information Management.
  • Assessors for the learner undertaking this qualification should have broad experience in the field of education and training, particularly with respect to the subject of Information Management.

    Assessors should also be well informed of what is required of them in connection to the assessment of the learner.

    As per the SAQA Board decision/s at that time, this qualification was Reregistered in 2006. 

    NOTES 
    The generic B Com Honours is already accredited by the Department of Education. This is a new endorsement, and forms part of an Information Management Programme with exit levels on:
  • NQF 5: Certificate in Information Management and Diploma in Information Management;
  • NQF 6: B Com (Information Management);
  • NQF 7: B Com Honours (Information Management) and Higher Diploma in eBusiness;
  • NQF 8: M Com (Information Management); M Phil (Information Management); D Com (Information Management); and PhD (Information Management).
