    3. The procedures for determining year / semester marks of each student enrolled at the Potchefstroom Akademie.

    Subject mark -
  • This is the examination admittance mark, which is based on major tests, class tests, practical work and evaluation of other academic achievements of students during the academic semester. A sub-minimum subject mark of 40% is applicable.
  • If a student is absent from a test (with reason) an opportunity to be re-evaluated has to be created for the student. It is the responsibility of the student to arrange a suitable date, with the particular lecturer for the test.
  • Subject marks may not be calculated on the number of tests for which the student reported, in other words, absence (without a doctor's letter or valid excuse) from tests must be penalised.

    Year subjects:
  • For full time students there will be a minimum of six evaluation opportunities, one of which will be major test or mid-year examination.

    Semester programmes:
  • Offering of instructional theory and practical programmes:
  • Subjects that are based on theory and practical are separately evaluated. Both must be passed at the end of the same year with an average of 50%.

The number of tests per semester:
  • A minimum of three class tests. Two of these tests must count to a minimum of 50 marks or more, and the major test must count a minimum of 100 marks or more.

    The calculation of subject mark:
  • Test 1 (50) + Test 2 (50) = 100.
  • Tests (100) + Major test (100) = 200 marks (Mark must be processed to %).
  • Final examination mark - Subject mark 50% + Examination mark 50% = 100%.

    Practical programmes:
  • For full and part time students there will be a minimum of six evaluation opportunities, one of which will be a major test or mid-year examination.

The calculation of subject mark is the same as for theory marks:

The minimum evaluation for a full and part time student is as follows:

    (i) First quarter:
  • Theory - a minimum of two class tests and each test must count 50 marks or more.
  • Practical - a minimum of two class evaluations and each evaluation must count 50 marks or more.

    Marks are calculated as follows:
  • Test/Evaluation 1 (50) + Test/Evaluation 2 (50) = 100 Report mark

A progress report is to be issued at the end of the term.

    (ii) Second quarter:
  • Theory - a minimum of one class test - 50 marks or more and a major test or mid-year examination of 100 marks or more.
  • Practical - One practical evaluation must be carried out, marked out of 50 or more and mid-year examination out of 100 marks.

    Marks are calculated as follows:
  • Test/Evaluation 1 (50) + Test /Evaluation 2 (50) + Test/Evaluation 3 (50)= 150 (Mark must be processed to %)
  • Test 100% + Mid Examination 100% =200 (Mark must be processed to %) Report mark

    Report mark
  • Progress report to be issued at the end of the quarter.

    (iii) Third quarter:
  • Theory - a minimum of two class tests and each test must count 50 marks or more.
  • Practical - a minimum of two class evaluations and each evaluation must count 50 marks or more.

    Marks are calculated as follows:
  • Test/Evaluation 1 (50) + Test/Evaluation 2 (50) + Test/Evaluation 3 (50) + Test/Evaluation 4 (50) + > Test/Evaluation 5 (50) = 250 (Mark must be processed to %)
  • Tests 100% + Mid Examination 100% =200 (Mark must be processed to %) Report mark and year mark

    (iv) Fourth quarter:
  • Theory - Final examination 100 marks or more
  • Practical - Final examination 100 marks or more

    Marks are calculated as follows:
  • Year mark 100% + Final examination 100% = 200 (Mark must be processed to %) Report mark
  • Practical - Year mark 100% + Final examination 100% = 200 (Mark must be processed to %) Report mark

Students entering at a research level - Final practical mark will be calculated as follows: 50% class practical mark + 50% practical thesis to be handed in at the end of the year = 100%

Progress report is to be issued at the end of the quarter.
(Alternative assignment or thesis can be used as a test result)

Refusal to sit for an examination:
  • A candidate will not be allowed to write an examination if he / she did not attain the minimum of 40 % of the subject mark. Any exceptions will be referred to the Director of the Academy for a decision.

A student will be refused admittance to examinations if class fees are not paid on time.

In cases where practical work is not separately examined, a practical mark of at least 50% will be required for acceptance to the theoretical examination.

The subject mark and the examination refusal will be available on the date when lectures close for examination. The above-mentioned date has to be set on a minimum of three academic days before the examination commences, with the exception of skills subjects and practical examinations.

It is the responsibility of each lecturer to hand in his or her subject mark, attendance figures, practical marks (where applicable), within at least seven academic days after the closure of the term. It has to be handed in at the administrative office to the administrative co-ordinator.

Subject lecturers are responsible for the accuracy of the subject marks and all queries or corrections will be referred to them.

    Calculation of the examination marks:
  • This is the examination admittance mark that is based on the major tests, class tests, practical work, evaluation and all other academic achievements of the student throughout the semester or the year. A sub-minimum of 40% is applicable on subject marks. When students are absent from tests as a result of a valid reason, there has to be an opportunity for a retake or re-evaluation. The responsibility lies with the student to arrange a date with the lecturer to be re-evaluated. Subject marks may not be calculated on the number of tests for which the student reported, in other words the absence (without valid reason or a doctor's note) of tests must be penalised. The mark allocated in this instance will be a zero.
