PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION
The purpose of the qualification is to contribute to the full personal development of each learner and to the socio-economic development of society at large, especially in the context of the production management sector.
The achievement of the qualification enables the learner to apply basic concepts and techniques in the field of production, and to identify opportunities in the workplace. The Certificate is a formal qualification that can provide further study in education at NQF level 5D.

Rationale for the Qualification:

Extensive research within manufacturing organizations has shown the need for a qualification for senior Supervisors and Superintendents in manufacturing that can be delivered within a flexible framework, and that will satisfy a national need of skills development as well as transportability within all industry sectors. Learners will be empowered with the relevant competent skills in the application of production technology theories and techniques in a supervisory context. Expertise is gained in the identification of production parameters in diverse manufacturing industries and engineering strategies to achieve them.

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
The qualification assumes that the learner is competent in the language of instruction of the College, which is English.

The learning assumed to be in place for the Certificate programme is:
  • NQF level 4 or equivalent qualification with mathematics and science as recommended subjects; or
  • Relevant commercial working experience in production or related fields.

    Recognition of Prior Learning:

Entry to this qualification may be achieved in part through the recognition of relevant prior learning at the appropriate level, and through prior experience as a practitioner in the field of production and operations. The College, through its Academic Board, will assess individual learners against the exit-level outcomes of the qualification on a case-by-case basis where required. This procedure may be subject to moderation by independent assessors.

    EXIT LEVEL OUTCOMES
Exit level outcomes are integrated with the critical cross-field outcomes, and reflect the learned knowledge of a junior production manager, who can demonstrate that they can function responsibly in their workplace, their organization and the community in which their organization operates.

    1. Competence is evident when learners are able to:
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the importance of using information in the work situation
  • Collect, organise and summarise information from a variety of sources
  • Respond appropriately to information collected
  • Enter data into retrieval systems where required
  • Ensure subordinates actively participate in meetings and problem-solving groups

    2. Competence is evident when learners are able to:
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the importance of communication in the workplace
  • Discuss and reflect upon their career within the organization

    3. Competence is evident when learners are able to:
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the concept of production techniques and processes and impacting factors

    4. Competence is evident when learners are able to:
  • Maintain procedures related to production systems
  • Implement continuous improvements to the production process
  • Maintain reports and documentation on the production process

  • ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
    1.1 Identify production related problems
1.2 Collect and analyse production information
1.3 Communicate effectively using visual mathematical and language skills

2.1 Organize and manage themselves and their activities responsibly and effectively
2.2 Work effectively as an individual and as part of a team or group
    2.3 Evaluate personal success

3.1 Demonstrate an understanding of effective and responsible decision making
3.2 Develop thinking patterns involving creativity

4.1 Maintain technology effectively and responsibly under supervision

    Integrated Assessment:

In the assessment strategy as a whole, evidence must be demonstrated through case studies, problem-solving assignments and projects, and should reflect practical and reflective competence. The integrated assessment needs to have the following characteristics:
  • Ongoing research to keep abreast of changes in the production and operations sector, in terms of the requirements of business
  • Each learner must complete at least six workplace related assignments during the programme
  • During the programme learners may hand in preliminary assignments that will be assessed according to the assessment criteria determined by the College. Assignments not meeting the assessment criteria will be returned to the learner with comments relating to the necessary improvements for final assessment
  • After improvements have been effected the learner will hand in final assignments for assessment
  • A portfolio of all training material used is kept and reviewed on at least an annual basis
  • Learners are accountable for self-evaluation exercises at the end of each module for the duration of the learning programme
  • The College makes use of continuous assessment. This mechanism ensures that learning does take place and that knowledge was imparted in the previous module. Evaluation is conducted through short tests, presentations and assignments.

  • INTERNATIONAL COMPARABILITY
As part of the College`s continuous improvement process, the Certificate in Production Technology has recently been compared with that of the Institute of Operations Management in the United Kingdom and was found to be comparable.

    ARTICULATION OPTIONS
Credit transfers or recognition or exemptions are considered for subjects already passed in a partially completed relevant qualification from an accredited institution, and are subject to the decision of the College`s Academic Board or its designated officer. Certified copies of qualifications or part qualifications or statements of results must be submitted.

    MODERATION OPTIONS
The College`s appointed moderators will examine a sample of not less than ten percent of marked assignments, ensuring a consistency and conformity with the College`s marking strategy. Particular attention must be given to the marks of learners who are on the borderline of passing or failing.

If the moderator recommends an alteration to the marks awarded by the examiner, a written motivation must be submitted to the College. Comments by the moderator regarding the current standards or suggested improvements are sought. Access is strictly controlled. Only duly authorised members of the College staff have access for the purpose of recording and checking marks.

CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS
Detailed documentary proof of educational qualifications and relevant practical teaching and work-based experience is provided by all lecturers/facilitators in the form of a Curriculum Vitae (portfolio of evidence). Lecturers/facilitators are academically qualified to at least one level higher than the level they teach, and are currently employed in the relevant industry in which their expertise functions.

A minimum of 2 (two) years practical, relevant occupational experience is required.
