PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
  • Graduates will be prepared for entering to the labour market as Labour Relations Executives at a strategic level of operation.
  • Graduates will be equipped with the required intellectual capacity to apply the knowledge of the subject in practice and to service the employers and employees in the employment relationship.
  • Graduates will be equipped with the necessary intellectual and practical skills for the optimal utilisation of the institutions and processes provided for in the institutional dispensation of Labour relations.

    The graduate will have a sound knowledge of the legislative framework for and the dynamics of the Labour Relations dispensation in South Africa, as well as that of other comparable countries. He/she will also have the ability to analyse the influences on the Labour relations system, identify strengths and weaknesses and extrapolate from other systems the probable remedies for areas of weakness in the system.

    Topic 1 - Describe all the (theoretical) approaches to the subject of Labour Relations and so describe accurately the nature and content of the subject area.
    Topic 2 - Describe nature and content of the various approaches to Collective bargaining as the key process in Labour Relations, and will be able to effectively bargain collectively and negotiate the substantive content of employment relationship.
    Topic 3 - Do a comparative analysis of various Labour Relations systems, and to evaluate the various structures and process for effectiveness and possible introduction into labour relations practice in South Africa.
    Topic 4 - Analyse the labour market dynamic in South Africa in terms of Labour Market theory, and to access the probable impact of projected developments in the labour market
    Topic 5 - Identify the various national and international influences on labour policy in South Africa, and to extrapolate probable developments in the future.
    Topic 6 - Compare the structural and procedural aspects of various legislative System, in order to contextualise developments in labour legislation in South Africa as the country enters the global village.
    Topic 7 - Identify the role of the employee as a human being in the labour relations system and dispensation so that the study of this subject will not become dehumanised.

    Topic 1- critically analyse theoretical concepts and constructs and relate the theory to institutions and processes in business.

    Topic 2 - apply negotiation theory to other business activities and also to utilise this expertise in his/her day-to day living.

    Topic 3 - do comparative analysis of various systems as a basis for theoretical and empirical research.

    Topic 4 - understand basic labour market economics and to describe the environmental influences on labour market dynamics.

    Topic 5 - describe environmental, political social and societal influences on the every day lives of people and on business in general.

    Topic 6 - evaluate legal systems other that that of South Africa and to describe the consequences of globalisation in terms of the influences of the various legal systems.

    Topic 7 - explain the interface between the human being and business dynamics in general, and to evaluate the effect of business systems on the human being.

  • ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA 
    All formative and summative assessment or the colloquium presentations, the assignments, colloquium debates, and also the public seminar paper, will be done by a panel consisting of at least two assessors, being the subject Head for Labour Relations and another, independent (academic) assessor from another university or tertiary institution.

  • Analyse the causes of certain constructive or disruptive phenomenon.

  • Design processes to meet theoretical requirements.

    The dissertation will be assessed by an academic panel of the department of Human Resources and also by one independent academic external examiner and one external examiner from industry or business. The dissertation will be evaluated in terms of the students (proven) ability to:
  • Plan an independent research project.
  • Describe the research problem.
  • Formulate postulates (where applicable) and a hypothesis.
  • Conduct a proper literature survey.
  • Develop an appropriate research methodology.
  • Design, validate and assess the reliability of a research instrument
  • Analyse (statistical/empirical) data.
  • Evaluate research findings.
