PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
To prepare learners with the necessary competencies for registration with the South African Pharmacy Council (SAPC) as pharmacy interns, for the purpose of final registration as pharmacists, who would provide pharmaceutical services to the community.

(i). For the private good - To provide qualifiers with knowledge of pharmaceutical care services and the accompanying competencies and attitudes to practice (an appropriate gainful economic activity), pursue further intellectual development, and contribute meaningfully to society.

(ii). For the public good - To provide the country with sufficient numbers of pharmacy graduates to ensure adequate and appropriate pharmaceutical services. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
Learners must hold a matriculation certificate or a certificate of exemption, and must have obtained a pass-mark in Mathematics on the higher grade or at least 50% on the standard grade, as well as a pass in Physical Science and (preferably) Biology.

Recognition of Prior Learning:

Applicants who are registered with the South African Pharmacy Council as a Pharmacist's Assistant, but who are not in possessing of matric exemption certificate, will be required to undertake successfully, the UPE Placement Test, and if necessary an appropriate bridging support programme, prior to consideration for admission.

Upon successful completion of the programme, and the experiential period of training, learners will be able to:

i. Organise the manufacturing, compounding and packaging of pharmaceutical products;

ii. Organise the procurement, storage and distribution of pharmaceutical products;

iii. Dispense and ensure the optimum use of medicine prescribed to the patient;

iv. Provide pharmacist initiated care to the patient and ensure the optimum use of medicine;

v. Provide education and information on health care and medicine;

vi. Promote community health and provide related information and advice;

vii. Participate in research to ensure the optimal use of medicines.

Format:

Continuous integrated assessments conducted at appropriate intervals by means of:

Written, practical and oral tests / examinations. 

ARTICULATION OPTIONS 
Vertical level

Qualification (minimum pass mark of 60 %) shall enable learners to have access to Masters degrees / programmes in the various sub-disciplines of Pharmacy.

Horizontal level

This qualification will articulate with a B.Sc. degree, a BPsych. degree and the M.A. in Health and Welfare Management degree. 

MODERATION OPTIONS 
External Moderators appointed for the final year of the programme from appropriately qualified academic staff at tertiary institutions.

Internal Moderators appointed for 1st, 2nd and 3rd year learners from the complement of staff across the sub-disciplines applicable to Pharmacy training / education.

The South African Pharmacy Council controls standards of undergraduate pharmacy education / training as specified in the current Pharmacy Act. 

CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS 
Qualification criteria - at least a postgraduate degree in Pharmacy at Masters level, and preferably registration with the South African Pharmacy Council as a pharmacist. 

REREGISTRATION HISTORY 
As per the SAQA Board decision/s at that time, this qualification was Reregistered in 2006.
